Previously: A little girl's only treasure hides a royal crest. When a billionaire couple arrives for a welfare check, the foster father's cruelty triggers a discovery that changes everything forever.

The Secret That Had Followed Them for Years

The police station was cold, but Sebastian barely felt it. He sat in the corner of the waiting area, Sophie asleep in Madeline's arms, her small fingers still clutching the blanket.

"How is this possible?" Madeline whispered, her voice raw. "We never... we couldn't have..."

Sebastian shook his head. "We did. Remember the fertility clinic? Five years ago?"

Madeline's face went pale. "The embryo donation. We signed papers, but we thought it was destroyed."

"Apparently not," Sebastian said, his jaw tight. "Someone took it. And they sold it."

The detective assigned to the case, a woman named Detective Reyes, walked over with a manila folder. "Mr. and Mrs. Cole, we've been digging into Carl Morrow's background. He's not just a foster parent. He's part of a black-market adoption ring."

Madeline's grip on Sophie tightened. "What?"

"We found records," Reyes continued, "of infants purchased from illegal clinics, then placed with foster parents who were paid to keep them until they were old enough to be sold again."

Sebastian stood, his fists clenched. "He was going to sell her."

"Most likely, yes," Reyes said. "But we've also found something else." She opened the folder, revealing a photo of a woman with dark hair and sad eyes. "This is Elena Vasquez. She was the nurse at the fertility clinic who handled your donation."

Madeline gasped. "She was arrested for fraud a few years ago."

"Yes," Reyes said. "But before she was arrested, she took several embryos. She sold them to couples who couldn't afford the legal process. But some of them, like yours, were sold to intermediaries like Morrow."

Sebastian ran a hand through his hair. "So Sophie was... she was ours the whole time."

"She's your biological daughter," Reyes confirmed. "But there's more. We found a ledger in Morrow's house. He kept records of every child he's trafficked. There are at least twelve others, all sold to families across the state."

Madeline's face crumpled. "Those poor babies."

Sophie stirred, her eyes fluttering open. She looked up at Madeline, then at Sebastian, and smiled a small, tentative smile.

"Mama?" she asked again.

Madeline kissed her forehead, tears streaming. "Yes, baby. I'm here. We're both here."

Sebastian knelt beside them, his voice thick with emotion. "Sophie, we're your real parents. We didn't know about you, but we're so glad we found you."

Sophie's eyes lit up. "You found me?"

"Yes, sweetheart," Sebastian said. "We found you. And we're never letting you go."

But as the three of them embraced, Detective Reyes's phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen, her expression darkening.

"Mr. Cole, we have a problem," she said. "The judge who granted Morrow's foster license... he's connected to the ring. He's trying to get Sophie put back into the system."

Sebastian's face hardened. "Over my dead body."

Madeline looked up, fear and fury warring in her eyes. "What do we do?"

"We fight," Sebastian said. "We fight for our daughter."

But even as he said it, he knew it wouldn't be that simple. The ring was powerful, and they had money and influence. But Sebastian had something they didn't—the truth.

And he was ready to use it.

That night, back at the Cole estate, Sebastian sat at his desk, staring at a stack of documents. His lawyer had already filed an emergency motion to grant them temporary custody. But the hearing was in three days, and the judge would be the same man who had approved Carl's license.

"We need a different judge," his lawyer said. "But it's hard to get a change of venue on short notice."

"Then we make it impossible for him to rule," Sebastian said. "I have connections. I know people who know people."

"Sebastian," Madeline said from the doorway, Sophie asleep in her arms, "are we doing the right thing? She's been through so much."

"She's our daughter," Sebastian said, his voice fierce. "She deserves to know who she is. She deserves a family that loves her."

Madeline nodded, tears glistening. "I just... I'm scared."

"So am I," Sebastian admitted. "But we can't let fear stop us. Not when she's finally home."

He walked over and wrapped his arms around them both, Sophie stirring slightly in Madeline's arms.

"We're going to win this," he whispered. "We have to."

But deep down, he knew the fight was just beginning.

The next morning, a courier delivered a letter to the Cole estate. It was addressed to Sebastian, and it was stamped with the seal of the state adoption agency.

Sebastian opened it with trembling hands, reading the words aloud: "Due to the ongoing investigation into Carl Morrow, the custody of Sophie Cole is temporarily suspended until a full hearing can be conducted. The child will be placed in protective custody."

Madeline's face went white. "They're taking her away?"

"No," Sebastian said, crumpling the letter. "They're not."

He grabbed his phone and dialed a number he hadn't used in years. "Hello? Yes, this is Sebastian Cole. I need a favor. A big one."
