The air in the Sterling estate’s coastal ballroom was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and the clinking of champagne flutes. Towering Bohemian crystal chandeliers cast prismatic light across the polished Carrara marble floors, reflecting the opulence that defined Courtney Sterling’s world. Outside, the distant thud of storm waves against the tall, arched French doors was a muted counterpoint to the hushed whispers of elite guests clad in black tuxedos and shimmering gowns. Into this rarefied atmosphere strode Liam Vance, a stark, unwelcome disruption. His commercial drysuit, torn and soaked, dripped seawater onto the immaculate floor, a dark puddle spreading around his dive boots. Liam, 31, with a chiseled jawline etched with sea salt and eyes like burning amber, was a storm surge in human form. Confronting him was Courtney Sterling, 48, a man whose aristocratic features and slicked, silver-streaked hair exuded cruel entitlement. Courtney swirled a crystal champagne coupe, his chin tilted upwards in a sneer as he surveyed Liam’s disheveled state.

The Drowning Man's Defiance

“Still dredging mud for pennies, Liam?” Courtney’s voice, laced with theatrical cruelty, echoed slightly in the sudden hush that fell over the room. “You are bankrupt, and your pathetic salvage permit expires at midnight.” Liam remained silent, his mouth firmly closed, but a vein pulsed violently along his temple, his jaw clenching with suppressed fury. Saltwater dripped from his brow, tracing a path down his weathered cheek. Courtney, relishing the power imbalance, leaned in, the gold tip of his walking stick insolently prodding Liam’s soaked neoprene chest. “Get on your knees and beg, boy,” he mocked, his lips curling in sadistic amusement, “and I might hire you to scrub the bilge on my yacht.” Liam’s breath hitched, a ragged intake of air before his pupils dilated, a lethal, calculated resolve hardening his gaze. He was done begging. He was done being scorned. The sea had given him a chance, and he would not let Courtney Sterling snatch it away.
