The air in the ancient bell tower mechanism room, now a surprisingly chic lounge for the Northwood High reunion, thrummed with the heavy, rhythmic clatter of colossal brass gears. Dust motes danced in the shafts of late-afternoon light piercing the gloom, catching the glint of tarnished metal. Outside, a ferocious rainstorm hammered against the tall, lancet windows, casting fragmented patterns of cobalt and crimson onto the damp, worn granite flagstones. Gregory Thorne, 38, a man whose aristocratic features were permanently set in a sneer, lounged against an iron balustrade. His slicked-back dark hair, silvering at the temples, framed a face that exuded arrogance. He wore a bespoke midnight-navy velvet tuxedo, its silk lapels gleaming, a gold watch chain a testament to his success. He turned his attention to Sarah Vance, also 38, who stood with a rigid, almost military posture, her hands clasped calmly behind her back. Her razor-sharp jawline and piercing hazel eyes held a composure that seemed out of place amidst Gregory’s overt display of wealth.

Gregory swirled the champagne in his crystal flute, a low, derisive chuckle vibrating in his chest. He pointed through an archway towards the rain-slicked street below, where a battered yellow cab idled conspicuously. "Look at you, Sarah!" he sneered, his voice laced with smug superiority. "Still taking a rattling yellow cab to our high school reunion?" Sarah remained silent, her mouth firmly closed, her posture unnervingly still. Her calm hazel eyes studied his mocking face with unflinching composure, an unnerving stillness that only seemed to fuel his disdain.

He closed the distance between them, his nostrils flaring, upper lip curling in a display of sadistic relish. The amber light caught the floating dust, illuminating the inches between his face and hers. "Ten million in hedge funds, and you're still the same penniless scholarship reject nobody wanted," he spat, his voice venomous. Sarah’s silence was her shield. A microscopic muscle tightened along her clenched jawline, but her breath remained slow, measured, and utterly unbothered. Gregory’s cruelty was a performance, and she refused to give him the reaction he craved.

Suddenly, the distant wail of sirens grew louder. Gregory’s attention flickered towards the cathedral archways. Four heavy, armored Suburbans, their red-and-blue strobes flashing erratically, sealed the iron perimeter gates. Black-clad federal tactical teams rapidly deployed, their movements swift and precise. Gregory glanced outside, a bark of incredulous laughter escaping him. "What kind of paranoid clown brings an armed presidential convoy to our reunion?" Sarah’s steady gaze remained locked on his, and as an imperceptible, icy smirk touched the corner of her mouth, Gregory realized his taunts had fallen flat, replaced by a growing, unsettling unease.
