The Frozen Secret That Forced a Broken Father to Confront His Darkest Sin
Previously: When Cora escaped into the freezing wasteland, she thought she was running for her life. But the man who found her wasn't her executioner—he was her father.
The Sins of the Family
For months, Cora had believed Alan was the mastermind behind her captivity. He was the patriarch of the wealthy Sterling family, a man whose word was law. When she had stumbled upon the financial ledgers proving the family had embezzled millions from her late mother’s estate, she had been snatched from her home the very next night. Seeing him now, weeping in the snow, confused her terrified mind.
Slowly, Alan approached, his boots crunching on the frozen gravel. He knelt beside her, ignoring the freezing mud, and gently draped his heavy wool overcoat over her trembling shoulders.
"I never wanted this for you, Cora,"he whispered, his eyes red and hollow.
"I locked you away in the cabin to keep you safe from Richard. If my brother knew you had those documents, he would have killed you instantly. I thought I could buy enough time to destroy him first."
Cora stared at him, her teeth chattering violently as the warmth of the coat began to seep into her shivering frame. "You kept me in a cage!" she screamed, her voice hoarse. "You let me believe I was going to die! How is that protection?"
Alan bowed his head, accepting her fury.
"It was a coward's choice,"he admitted, pulling a thick manila envelope from his inner pocket.
"Richard found out you escaped this morning. He has men searching the highway. But I have the evidence here. Everything to put Richard away for life, and everything to restore what was stolen from your mother. But it will ruin our family name forever. I don’t care about that anymore. I only care about keeping you alive."
Before Cora could process his words, the distant glare of headlights cut through the gray twilight. Another car was approaching fast, its engine roaring with menacing intent. Richard’s men had found them.
