The air inside the quiet suburban chapel was heavy with the scent of lilies and artificial grief. Leo, a pale nineteen-year-old in a dark suit that hung loosely on his frame, stood before the pristine white wood casket. His eyes were red, but they weren't just wet with tears; they burned with a desperate, wild fury. While the rest of the mourners sat in stunned silence, Leo gripped a heavy sledgehammer, his knuckles white.

A Final Desperate Act

With a guttural cry, he swung the hammer down. The heavy iron head cracked the polished wood casket lid with a sickening, splintering sound.

"Stop! Put that down!"

David, Leo's stern, forty-four-year-old stepfather, stepped forward from the front pew. Wearing a light brown windbreaker that looked entirely too casual for a funeral, David's face was a mask of cold authority.

But Leo didn't back down. Tears streamed down his face as he raised the hammer again.

"You have to open it! She's still inside!" Leo screamed, his voice cracking with pure agony.

Among the crowd, Sarah, a family friend in a black winter coat, gasped loudly, her hand flying over her mouth. "Oh my God," she whispered, looking around for help.

Before anyone could intervene, Leo swung again, shattering a gaping hole into the top of the coffin. But as he prepared for a third blow, the metallic click of a firearm echoed through the chapel. David had drawn a handgun from the inner pocket of his windbreaker, aiming it directly at Leo's chest.

"Step away from the coffin, Leo," David warned, his voice dangerously calm.

But Leo didn't look at the gun. He looked down through the splintered hole. There, peering back up through the darkness of the casket, were the wide, terrified eyes of his sister, Maya. A thick strip of grey duct tape was sealed over her mouth, and she was desperately struggling against her bonds. She was alive.
