Previously: At a gala, a cold-hearted director shoves a quiet orphan girl aside. But when she lifts her locket, the billionaire couple freezes — her birthmark matches their daughter's exactly. A secret is about to shatter everything.

The Second Theft

Within hours, a manhunt was underway. Roland Cross had vanished from his penthouse, leaving behind a note that read simply: "You'll never find her again."

But Roland didn't know who he was dealing with.

Edward Hawthorne had built an empire on one principle: never let a thread go untied. He called every contact he had, from Wall Street to Interpol, and within twenty-four hours, they had a lead.

Roland had boarded a private jet bound for a small island in the Caribbean — an island owned by a company that traced back to Sterling & Wake.

"He's going to the source," Alvarez said. "He's going to see whoever was behind this from the beginning."

Beatrice's father had been dead for a decade. But his legacy lived on in the form of his most trusted lawyer, a man named Arthur Vance.

"Vance handled everything," Beatrice said, her voice flat. "The will, the trust, the funerals. He was my father's right hand."

"And now he's Roland's partner in this," Edward said grimly. "Let's go."

They flew to the island in Edward's private jet, with Mia and Maya tucked into a cabin, guarded by two security details. The girls didn't understand the danger, but they held hands the entire flight.

When they landed, a car was waiting. It drove them to a sprawling estate hidden behind palm trees, where Arthur Vance sat on a veranda, sipping cognac as if he had all the time in the world.

"Edward, Beatrice," he said, not bothering to rise. "I was wondering when you'd figure it out."

"Where is Roland?" Edward demanded.

Vance smiled thinly. "He's already been dealt with. He panicked, tried to blackmail me. I'm afraid he's no longer a problem."

Beatrice stepped forward. "Why?" she asked, her voice cracking. "Why did you and my father do this?"

Vance set down his glass. "Your father didn't want to split the inheritance. He believed that one strong heir was worth more than two weak ones. And he was never fond of your husband's... ambition."

"So you stole my baby," Beatrice whispered. "You tore our family apart."

"We didn't tear it apart," Vance said. "We made it stronger. Maya had the legacy. And now, well, it seems you've found the spare."

Edward's fists clenched. "You're going to pay for this."

"Am I?" Vance laughed. "I have recordings of every conversation I had with your father. He was the mastermind. He's dead. I'm just a lawyer who followed orders."

"That's not going to save you," a voice said from behind them.

Detective Alvarez stepped out of the shadows, flanked by two uniformed officers. "Arthur Vance, you're under arrest for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, fraud, and obstruction of justice."

Vance's smug smile finally faltered. "You can't prove anything."

"We have the bank records," Alvarez said. "We have Roland's confession — he's in custody at the airport. And we have your emails to the orphanage, arranging Mia's placement."

Vance's face went pale. "That's... that's not possible."

"It's amazing what you can find when you actually look," Alvarez said, handcuffing him.

As Vance was led away, the twins ran out onto the veranda, their small feet pattering on the stone floor.

"Mommy!" Maya cried. "Did you catch the bad man?"

Beatrice knelt, gathering both girls into her arms. "Yes, baby. He's gone. And he's never going to hurt anyone again."

Mia looked up at her with those serious eyes. "So I get to stay?"

"Forever," Edward said, kneeling beside his wife. "You're a Hawthorne. And we don't let our family go."

The family held each other on the veranda, the Caribbean sun warming their faces. It wasn't the gala they'd imagined, but it was better.

It was home.

That night, Beatrice tucked both girls into the same bed, their raven braids tangled together on the pillow. She kissed their foreheads and whispered, "We'll never be parted again."

And for the first time in six years, Mia slept without dreaming of a locked door.

In the months that followed, the Hawthorne family made headlines. The stolen twin, the corrupt lawyer, the gala that changed everything. They donated the orphanage to a new foundation, one that cared for children who had been forgotten.

But the real story wasn't in the papers. It was in the way Mia learned to laugh without flinching. The way Maya taught her how to braid her hair. The way Edward would sometimes just sit and watch his two daughters play, tears streaming down his face, unable to believe his luck.

And Beatrice? She kept the faded blue dress, framed it, and hung it in her office as a reminder.

Some secrets are buried deep. But love, once found, refuses to stay hidden.
