The Custodian's Gambit

As Damian’s frantic pronouncements echoed through the ballroom, Ruth began to move. With deliberate steps, she made her way onto the elevated dais, her worn rubber boots squeaking faintly against the polished floor. The hushed murmurs of the crowd had turned into a ripple of unease. Damian, still reeling from his own intellectual failure, snapped his head around as Ruth approached the whiteboard. His nostrils flared in affronted outrage. "Step away from that board, janitor, before security drags you out!" he commanded, lunging forward with a high-velocity grab to seize her wrist. His arrogance was a shield, meant to deflect his own inadequacy. But Ruth pivoted with a calm, rotational leverage that smoothly evaded his grasp. Damian’s outstretched hand struck empty air with a muffled whoosh, sending him stumbling off-balance against the mahogany lectern. The unexpected movement drew a collective gasp from the onlookers, momentarily breaking the spell of Damian’s crisis. Ruth, unfazed, continued her deliberate advance towards the whiteboard, the blue marker held firmly between her weathered knuckles.

"You forgot the Kerr metric frame-dragging coefficient, son—she's not collapsing, she's slingshotting."

With fluid, almost surgical precision, Ruth dragged the felt eraser across Damian’s complex singularity equation. A crisp cloud of white powder billowed momentarily before dissipating. Then, with a decisive hiss, she began to scrawl an elegant, non-linear quantum gravity derivative across the glossy white surface. Her movements were economical, confident, the ink flowing from the marker with an authority that silenced the room. Damian watched, his breath hitching audibly in his chest. His pupils dilated into wide, paralyzed shock as beads of cold sweat began to trickle down his pale temples. The frantic red scribbles of his failed attempt were being systematically replaced by a solution that was both beautiful and terrifyingly simple. The telemetry jumbotron, which had been flashing an ominous red, suddenly chimed with a reverberating green harmonic pulse. Across the ballroom, the stranded probe’s signal locked into nominal orbit. A wave of stunned silence washed over the crowd, followed by tentative whispers that quickly grew into a roar of disbelief and relief.
