The noon sun beat down mercilessly on the weathered concrete yard of Blackwood Penitentiary. High above, the razor-wire fences hummed with tension, and guards in the watchtowers kept their rifles trained on the crowd below. In the center of the yard, the sea of orange jumpsuits parted to reveal a stage set for an execution. Or so they thought.

The Standoff

Garrett, a colossal man whose reputation for brutality preceded him, stepped forward. He was heavily tattooed, his thick arms covered in dark ink, and his curly brown hair and rugged beard gave him the appearance of a wild beast. He loomed over Paige, a slender woman who looked entirely out of place in her blue tank top and oversized orange trousers.

The crowd cheered, sensing blood. Garrett smiled mockingly down at her, expecting the usual tears. He flexed his massive chest and leaned in.

"Well, show us what you're capable of," he sneered.

Paige didn't flinch. She had short black hair that framed a face of pure steel. Looking up defiantly into the eyes of the giant, she didn't take a single step back. Frustrated by her lack of fear, Garrett flexed his massive arms and let out a terrifying, guttural roar that rattled the chain-link fences. It was a display designed to break anyone's spirit.

But Paige stood completely unfazed. Her calm gaze seemed to pierce right through his bravado. The surrounding inmates, stunned by her absolute lack of fear, erupted into a mixture of cheers and disbelieving whispers. They had never seen anyone, let alone someone so small, stand up to the yard's undisputed king. But Paige wasn't there by accident, and she certainly wasn't afraid of a bully.
