The concrete yard of Blackwood Penitentiary was nothing short of a furnace. High, sun-bleached walls topped with razor-sharp barbed wire hemmed us in, while the guards in the watchtowers looked down on us like vultures waiting for a meal. I stood in my white tank top and orange trousers, the hot wind blowing strands of my messy brown bun across my face. I was framed for a crime I didn't commit, and now, I was standing in the lion's den.

The Confrontation in the Yard

A crowd of inmates in orange jumpsuits had gathered in a wide circle, their murmurs rising like the hum of angry wasps. At the center of that circle was Silas. He was a colossal, heavily tattooed man with slicked-back brown hair and a thick, dark beard. He was the undisputed king of Blackwood, a brute who broke people for fun. And today, I was his target.

Silas loomed over me, his massive shadow completely engulfing my slender frame. He looked down at me, a mocking grin spreading across his face, enjoying the audience. The crowd egged him on, shouting provocations into the dry air.

"Well, show us what you're capable of," Silas sneered, his voice dripping with condescension.

He expected me to cower. He expected tears. Instead, I looked up, locking my eyes onto his with absolute defiance. Silas’s grin faltered for a brief second, annoyed by my silence. To reassert his dominance, he flexed his massive, ink-covered arms and let out a guttural, terrifying roar right in my face. The crowd erupted into cheers, expecting me to break.

But I stood completely unfazed. I didn't take a single step back. In fact, I took a step forward, bringing myself closer to the monster.
