A Tense Encounter at the Counter

The morning light poured through the towering arched windows of the First National Bank, casting long, elegant shadows across the polished marble floor. Behind counter number three, Arthur adjusted his charcoal tie and sighed. It was a typical Tuesday, filled with the usual demanding clients and endless spreadsheets. But the mundane routine shattered when Officer Davis, a respected veteran officer, walked through the heavy glass doors. Clinging to his side was a young boy, no older than eight, clutching a vibrant gold envelope as if his very life depended on it.

Arthur frowned as they approached his station. The boy, Leo, wore a simple blue t-shirt and had a look of quiet determination that seemed far too mature for his age. Arthur, feeling the pressure of a growing line behind them, leaned over the white marble counter.

"Leave. Now,"
Arthur commanded, his voice a tense whisper. He didn't want a scene, and a child accompanied by police usually meant trouble.

But Leo didn't flinch. He looked up with wide, brown eyes and spoke clearly.

"I want to check my account."

Arthur's brow furrowed. Before Officer Davis could intervene, Arthur reached out and gently but firmly took the gold envelope from the boy's small hands. The paper felt unusually thick, textured, and sealed with a wax stamp that looked hauntingly familiar. Arthur felt a sudden chill run down his spine.

"Where did you get this?"
he asked, his voice losing its sharp edge, replaced by a sudden, creeping anxiety.

"It is mine. My grandmother left it for me,"
Leo answered softly.

Arthur began typing quickly on his computer keyboard, his fingers flying across the keys as he entered the account number scribbled on the back of the envelope. The screen flickered, loading the secure database. As the details began to populate, Arthur's breath hitched. His intense expression mirrored the sudden panic in his chest. Leo leaned forward on his tiptoes.

"What is my balance?"
the boy asked, unaware that the numbers on the screen were about to change everything.
