Previously: When a sobbing boy stopped Hannah in a dark alley, showing her a rare family heirloom, she never expected it would lead her to the sister she lost a decade ago.

The Search in the Shadows

Hannah dropped to her knees on the cold, damp cobblestones, ignoring the wetness seeping through her trousers. She grabbed the boy's trembling shoulders, her eyes searching his face. Now that she looked closely, she saw the familiar arch of the eyebrows, the piercing green eyes. He looked so much like the photographs she kept on her nightstand.

"What is your name, sweetie?" Hannah asked, her voice cracking as she tried to maintain her composure.
"Mason," the boy sobbed, wiping his nose with the sleeve of his damp jacket. "My mom... she's really sick. She's in our apartment, and she wouldn't wake up tonight. She told me about you. She said you walked this way from work every Tuesday. She told me to look for the charcoal coat and the blue stone."

The revelation hit Hannah like a physical blow. Clara hadn't just disappeared; she had been nearby, watching, keeping track of her sister's routine, yet never making contact. Why had she hidden for a whole decade? Why keep her own nephew a secret?

"Take me to her, Mason. Right now," Hannah urged, her heart pounding with a mixture of hope and terror.

Mason nodded quickly, turning and running down the alley. Hannah scrambled to her feet and followed him, her heels clicking loudly against the stone. They turned corner after corner, venturing deeper into a neglected, industrial part of the city. Finally, Mason stopped in front of a dilapidated, brick apartment building with flickering hallway lights and peeling paint.

They climbed three flights of creaking wooden stairs, the air heavy with the smell of old dust and boiling cabbage. Mason pushed open an unlocked door at the end of the hall. The apartment was tiny, dark, and freezing. In the corner, on a sagging mattress covered in thin blankets, lay a frail woman. Her hair was thin, her cheeks hollow, but as Hannah approached, she recognized the unmistakable features of her beloved sister.

"Clara?" Hannah whispered, rushing to the bedside and taking her sister's cold, limp hand.
