Previously: When an eight-year-old orphan interrupted a high-society banquet holding a rare silver locket, a wealthy patriarch's dark family secret was finally dragged into the light.

A Whispered Accusation

The grand banquet hall fell into a suffocating silence as Charles stepped down from the dais. His eyes were locked entirely on the silver heart-shaped locket in Chloe's tiny hand. It was a custom piece, one of only two in existence, commissioned by his beloved daughter Clara before she tragically vanished a decade ago. Charles had searched for her for years, eventually forced to accept the grim theory that she had drowned. Yet here was this child, holding the sister piece to the locket that had rested against his own chest every day since her disappearance.

Beatrice stepped in front of Charles, her posture rigid, her voice laced with panic. "Charles, please, don't let this street urchin ruin our evening. She probably stole that locket from a pawn shop. I'll have security throw her out immediately." She reached out to grab Chloe's arm, but Charles raised a hand, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register.

"Touch her, Beatrice, and I will have you escorted out instead."

Charles knelt before the trembling girl on the cold marble floor. His hands shook as he compared his locket to hers. They were a perfect match. "Where did you get this, sweetheart?" he asked, his voice cracking with a decade's worth of suppressed tears.

Chloe wiped her nose with her sleeve, her voice small but clear.

"My mommy gave it to me. She told me to find the man who wore the other half. She said he was my grandpa."

A collective gasp echoed through the room. Charles felt his heart stop. "Who is your mother?" he whispered. Chloe looked directly at Beatrice, who had gone completely pale, sweat breaking out on her forehead.

"My mommy is Clara. She's very sick in a clinic outside the city. She told me the lady in the gold dress put her there so she couldn't come home."
