Previously: When Clara’s wealthy grandfather visited her in the hospital, he asked about the millions he had been sending. Clara was shocked—she hadn't seen a single penny of it.

The silence in the hospital room was suffocating. Clara looked from her grandfather’s fierce gaze to her husband’s trembling hands. For the past year, Julian had forced her to live in a cramped, drafty apartment, claiming they couldn't afford anything better. He had even made her feel guilty for wanting brand-new baby clothes, forcing her to rely on cheap hand-me-downs.

"Arthur, please," Julian stammered, stepping forward and trying to flash a reassuring smile that failed miserably. "There must be some misunderstanding. Clara has been getting the best care. We’ve been saving the money for her future!"
"Do not lie to me, boy," Arthur growled, stepping between Julian and the hospital bed. "I have the transaction histories. Every single month, a quarter of a million dollars was transferred from my estate to the account we set up for Clara's care. An account you and your mother insisted on managing to 'spare Clara the stress' during her high-risk pregnancy."

Eleanor tried to intervene, her voice tight and high-pitched. "Mr. Sterling, we only wanted to protect Clara! The market has been volatile, and we invested—"

"You invested in luxury cars and designer clothes!" Clara cried out, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. The truth was crashing down on her like a tidal wave. She looked at the expensive bags Eleanor was holding. "You told me we were broke! You told me my grandfather hated me and wished I was never born!"

Arthur’s face contorted in pain and fury. He turned to Clara, his voice cracking with emotion. "My sweet girl, I could never hate you. I sent that money to ensure you had the finest doctors, the best food, and a beautiful home. I thought you were living in luxury." Julian realized the game was up. He glared at Clara, his facade of the loving husband completely vanishing. "You wouldn't have known what to do with that money anyway!" he spat.
