Chloe shrank back as Arthur approached, her voice trembling as much from fear as from the biting cold.

"Stay away from me!" she cried, her voice cracking. "Did she send you to make sure I was gone?"

Arthur fell to his knees in the snow just inches from her, his hands shaking violently as he reached out, not daring to touch her.

"Chloe? Oh my God, Chloe, it really is you," he sobbed, his voice thick with emotion. "I thought you were gone. Evelyn told me you died in that horrible cabin fire. She showed me the dental records, the ashes... I believed her!"

The name of her stepmother sent a shudder of rage through Chloe’s freezing veins. "Evelyn lied to you," Chloe whispered, her teeth chattering.

"She locked me away, Arthur. She kept me in a private facility for years to get her hands on my mother's inheritance. And when I finally escaped yesterday, her henchmen chased me out here and left me to freeze."

Arthur stared at his granddaughter, the horrifying truth crashing down upon him. He had spent the last five years mourning Chloe, donating millions to Evelyn’s fake charities, and preparing to sign over the entire family estate to a monster. Just yesterday, Arthur had found a hidden key to Evelyn's private safe, discovering a set of monthly payments to a secluded medical asylum. Suspicious and heartbroken, he had tracked the coordinates, only to find the facility abandoned and tire tracks leading out into this wasteland.

Suddenly, the sound of another engine echoed in the distance. A heavy pickup truck was speeding toward them, kicking up plumes of snow.
