Previously: When Martha stomped on her granddaughter's birthday cake, her son David tackled her in a rage. But the truth behind her sudden madness shocked the entire family.

The Hidden Danger

The room descended into absolute chaos. David’s wife, Sarah, rushed to comfort the hysterical Emily, pulling her away from the mess, while David stood guard over his mother, waiting for the police and an ambulance to arrive. Martha lay on the floor, weeping softly now, her eyes darting around the room as if she didn't recognize where she was.

"You've crossed the line this time, Mom,"
David breathed, his voice shaking with a mixture of betrayal and sorrow.
"How could you do this to Emily? She is just a child! She did nothing to you!"

But as the tension in the room reached a boiling point, Martha pointed a trembling, frosting-covered finger toward the kitchen, and then at the ruined cake.

"The white powder,"
she whispered, her voice suddenly devoid of the previous anger, replaced instead by sheer terror.
"In the pantry. The box with the skull. She put it in the flour."

David froze. His heart hammered against his ribs as he looked from his mother to Sarah, whose face had suddenly turned pale. Sarah had baked the cake from scratch that morning. David ran to the kitchen pantry, his mind racing with terrible possibilities. On the bottom shelf, right next to the baking supplies, was a container of highly toxic rodenticide that had been mislabeled in a ceramic jar. In her haste to prepare the party, Sarah had mistaken the white chemical powder for powdered sugar, using it to dust the cake layers.

Martha, who spent most of her days sitting quietly in the kitchen, had witnessed Sarah baking. Though her advanced dementia often made it hard for her to communicate, she had recognized the dangerous jar. When she saw Emily about to eat the cake, her maternal instinct had flared in the only way her confused mind knew how: she had to destroy the poison immediately to save her granddaughter.
