The Shattered Welcome

The afternoon sun filtered through the towering stained-glass windows of the Winchester estate, casting long, elegant shadows across the checkered marble foyer. Charles stepped through the heavy oak double doors, a gentle smile playing on his lips. In his arms, he cradled a fresh bouquet of pink roses, their sweet fragrance filling the air. He had come to surprise his beloved grandmother, Margaret, who was recovering from a sudden illness. But the serene silence of the mansion was abruptly shattered by a guttural scream from the main hall.

Heart racing, Charles dropped his keys and rushed toward the sound. What he witnessed stole the breath from his lungs. On the cold marble floor lay Margaret, her frail body trembling as she desperately clutched her brass walking cane for protection. Standing over her was Penelope, Charles’s wife of three years, dressed in a sharp charcoal cocktail dress. Penelope’s face was distorted with a rage Charles had never seen before. With a wild cry, Penelope lunged forward, snatching the brass cane and striking the elderly woman.

"You greedy old fool! You won't ruin my life!" Penelope shrieked, raising the cane again.

Time seemed to freeze. The bouquet of pink roses slipped from Charles’s paralyzed fingers, scattering delicate petals across the polished floor. Horror morphed into pure, instinctual protective fury. Charles lunged forward. He grabbed Penelope by her dark hair, pulling her backward with enough force to break her grip on the cane. As Penelope spun around, clawing at him, Charles delivered a powerful punch straight to her jaw. The blow sent her crashing to the marble floor. To ensure she couldn't rise to strike his grandmother again, he delivered a sharp kick to her side, stepping firmly between them like a human shield.

"Touch her again, and I swear it will be the last thing you do," Charles growled, his voice shaking with a terrifying intensity.
