A Brother’s Desperate Stand

The air inside the modern wooden chapel was thick with the scent of lilies and artificial grief. Eighteen-year-old Leo stood at the back, his dark charcoal suit feeling like a straightjacket. In the center of the room sat a pristine white casket, supposedly holding the body of his twin sister, Chloe. The official report said she had drowned in a tragic lake accident, and their stepfather, David, had rushed to organize a closed-casket service, citing "severe water damage." But Leo knew his sister. He knew she was a champion swimmer, and more importantly, he knew David’s greedy heart.

Before anyone could stop him, Leo marched down the center aisle, his knuckles white around the handle of a heavy industrial sledgehammer. The mourners gasped, whispering in hushed, panicked tones. David, standing near the front in a beige trench coat, froze, his stern face darkening with immediate fury.

"Leo! What is the meaning of this? Step back!" David commanded, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.

Leo didn't answer with words. With a guttural cry of pure desperation, he swung the heavy hammer. Crack! The pristine white wood of the casket lid splintered under the immense force. Shockwaves of horror rippled through the chapel.

"You have to open it!" Leo screamed, tears streaming down his face as he hoisted the hammer again.
"Stop! Put that down right now!" David shouted, stepping forward, his hand slipping inside his trench coat.
"She's still inside!" Leo sobbed, swinging the hammer once more.

The second blow shattered the lid completely, caving in the center. Sarah, a close family friend sitting in the front row, let out a piercing shriek, covering her mouth in absolute horror. David drew a compact black handgun from his coat, pointing it directly at Leo's chest.

"Step away from the coffin, Leo, or I swear to God I will end this right now," David hissed.

But Leo didn't look at the gun. He peered through the splintered hole. There, lying on the white satin sheet, was Chloe. Her eyes were wide with sheer terror, her chest heaving, and a thick strip of grey duct tape was sealed over her mouth.
