A grieving mother discovers her late son's hidden family at his grave
Previously: Standing before her son Andrew’s grave, Carolyn expects only quiet grief. Instead, she meets Olivia—a young woman holding a toddler who carries a secret that will change Carolyn’s life forever.
The Secret Andrew Kept
Carolyn felt the world spinning beneath her feet. She stared at the little girl, then at the young woman who introduced herself as Olivia. It seemed impossible. Andrew was a focused, ambitious young man who had been living two hours away for his career. He called his mother every Sunday, yet he had never once mentioned a woman, let alone a child.
"This can't be true," Carolyn stammered, shaking her head in denial. "Andrew would have told me. We were close. He wouldn't keep something like this from his own mother!"
Olivia reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a small, worn leather-bound journal. She stepped forward and handed it to Carolyn with trembling hands.
"I know how hard this is to believe," Olivia said gently. "We met two years ago. When I got pregnant, Andrew was terrified. He wanted to be a perfect father, but he wanted to secure his promotion first so he could buy us a house. He was planning to bring us to meet you at Thanksgiving. He wrote everything in here."
With shaking fingers, Carolyn opened the journal. The handwriting was unmistakably Andrew’s. Page after page detailed his love for Olivia, his fears of failing as a father, and his immense joy when baby Maya was born. One entry, dated just days before his death, read: 'I need to tell Mom. She’s going to love Maya so much. I just want to make her proud first.'
The realization hit Carolyn like a physical blow. Her son hadn't hidden his family out of shame or malice, but out of a deep-seated desire to present a perfect, stable life to the mother who had raised him alone. She looked up from the pages, her eyes blurred with tears, looking at the innocent face of her granddaughter.
