Previously: When Martha visited her son Andrew's grave on a cold, rainy afternoon, she expected solitude. Instead, she found a young woman holding a child who possessed Andrew's unmistakable blue eyes.

The Secrets We Keep

The roses slipped from Martha’s hands, tumbling onto the wet grass. She stared at the little girl, her mind refusing to accept what her eyes were desperately trying to tell her. The resemblance was undeniable. The shape of the girl's nose, the stubborn set of her chin, and those brilliant blue eyes were a carbon copy of Andrew as a child. Yet, the shock felt like a physical blow.

"No, that’s impossible," Martha stammered, shaking her head. "Andrew would have told me. He was my son! We shared everything. You're lying."

Jessica stepped forward, letting out a ragged sob. She reached into her tan coat and pulled out a small, plastic-wrapped journal. "I wish I were lying, Martha. I’m Jessica. Andrew and I were together for three years. We lived in the city, just an hour away from you."

"Three years?" Martha’s voice was barely a whisper. "Why would he keep you a secret from his own mother?"

Jessica looked down, a shadow of pain crossing her face. "Because he was terrified of your judgment. You wanted him to take over the family firm, to marry someone from your social circle. When he chose to pursue his photography and fell in love with a struggling waitress like me, he knew you wouldn't approve. He wanted to build a stable life for us first, to prove he could succeed on his own terms before bringing us to meet you."

Martha felt a cold dread pool in her stomach. She remembered the harsh arguments she’d had with Andrew, the ultimatums she’d delivered when he refused to follow her corporate path. She had thought she was protecting him, but instead, she had driven him into a secret life.

"He was going to bring us to Thanksgiving," Jessica continued, wiping a tear from her toddler’s cheek. "He had bought the train tickets. But then... the accident happened. He left this journal for me. Inside, he wrote a letter. It said that if anything ever happened to him, I had to find you. He wrote, 'My mother is stubborn, but she has a good heart. She will love Lily.'"
