A Grieving Mother Follows a Strange Orphan Girl and Uncovers a Heartstopping Secret
Previously: When Sarah and John met a mysterious young girl at their twins' grave, they never expected her chilling words would lead them to a dark, hidden secret.
The Locked Door
The girl led them to St. Jude’s Orphanage, a towering, grim Victorian building on the edge of town. Inside, the air was thick with the smell of old wax and floor polish. They were met by Mrs. Gable, the stern headmistress, who immediately ordered the young girl, Lily, back to her room. When John demanded to see the twin boys, Mrs. Gable’s face hardened into a mask of pure denial.
"We have no twins here," she said coldly. "That girl has an overactive imagination. I must ask you to leave."
But Sarah wasn't listening. From the end of the long, dimly lit corridor, she heard a sound that made her heart stop—a soft, synchronized giggling. It was a sound she had dreamed of for two agonizing years. Pushing past Mrs. Gable, Sarah ran down the hallway, John close behind her.
They reached a heavy oak door at the back of the building. It was locked. Feeling a strength born of pure desperation, John threw his weight against the wood until the frame splintered. The door burst open, revealing a small, hidden playroom.
There, sitting on a colorful mat, were two toddler boys with John’s curly black hair and Sarah’s striking green eyes. They looked exactly like the age-progressed photos Sarah kept under her pillow.
Mrs. Gable rushed into the room, her face pale with terror. "You don't understand!" she whispered frantically. "You have to leave before they find out you're here. If they find out, we are all dead!"
Before Sarah could ask what she meant, the heavy front doors of the orphanage slammed open downstairs. Heavy, deliberate footsteps began to climb the wooden staircase, echoing like a death knell through the silent building.
