Previously: When 19-year-old Leo climbed into the rodeo ring with a deadly black bull, the crowd screamed. But Leo wasn't looking for a fight—he was looking for his father.

The Scent of the Past

A suffocating silence fell over the entire stadium. Thousands of eyes watched, paralyzed with fear, expecting the massive bull to gore the boy in a split second. But instead of charging, Ranger’s nostrils flared. The great beast lowered his head, his massive horns framing Leo’s fragile frame. The bull took a deep, shuddering breath, inhaling the scent of the faded red bandana. Leo’s father, Thomas, had been a legendary animal trainer who had raised Ranger from a sickly calf on their family ranch before a sudden illness took Thomas’s life, forcing the bank to auction off everything—including Ranger.

Suddenly, the arena gate slammed open. Marcus Vance, the wealthy and ruthless rodeo owner who had purchased Ranger, marched into the dirt brandishing a heavy tranquilizer rifle. Two burly handlers followed close behind with heavy ropes.

"Get away from that beast, kid! He's a killer, and I'm not losing my star attraction or getting sued because some suicidal teenager jumped the fence!" Marcus bellowed.

Leo stepped in front of Ranger, shielding the massive bull with his own body. "Don't shoot him! He's not wild, he's just scared! You've been mistreating him, using electric prods to make him look angry!" Leo shouted back, his voice cracking with emotion. The crowd gasped as Leo exposed the rodeo's cruel secrets. Marcus's face flushed deep red with anger. He pointed the rifle directly at Ranger, ignoring Leo's plea.

"That animal is my property, and he's going down one way or another. Move, or you're going to jail!" Marcus sneered, stepping closer.

But Ranger didn't act like a wild beast. Sensing the threat to Leo, the bull let out a low, protective rumble, stepping forward so his massive shoulder shielded the boy. The crowd watched in utter disbelief as the "killer" bull acted as a guardian for the grieving teenager.
