A Winter Wedding's Shattered Peace

The air outside St. Jude's Cathedral was a brutal, biting cold, the kind that steals your breath and numbs your fingers to the bone. Snow dusted the towering gothic limestone steps, a delicate white blanket clashing with the bruised twilight shadows of a freezing winter dusk. Golden light spilled from the cathedral's grand arched doors, a warm invitation into the sacred space, but it did little to soften the harsh reality unfolding on the wet flagstones.

There, looming with an arrogance that seemed to radiate cold, stood Armand Dubois. At 28, dressed in a midnight-navy velvet tuxedo with glistening silk lapels and diamond cufflinks, he looked every bit the patrician heir he believed himself to be. His jaw was set in cruel contempt, a stark contrast to the shivering figure beside him.

Tommy Shaw, Armand's 17-year-old autistic stepbrother, huddled in an oversized tweed jacket, a thrift store find that offered little protection against the arctic chill. His small hands, white-knuckled, clutched a carved wooden bird, a precious memento. His shoulders were hunched inward, a physical manifestation of his anxiety, his body a tight coil of nerves.

Standing a little apart, his broad shoulders tense, was Nathan Shaw, their father. At 54, Nathan was a carpenter, his hands weathered and calloused, scarred from years of working with timber. He wore a worn charcoal wool suit, but it did little to hide the rugged lines etched into his face, his silver stubble catching the dimming light. Dense plumes of white steam escaped his lips with every harsh breath, a visible testament to the biting cold.

Suddenly, Armand moved. With aggressive intent, he stepped forward, a low-angle push-in capturing the menacing shift. In a swift, brutal motion, his hand shot out, delivering a vicious open-palm slap across Tommy's face. The sharp, concussive crack echoed unnaturally in the still air. Tommy, caught off guard, spun violently, his small frame staggering on the slushy steps. The carved wooden bird clattered across the frost-covered stone.

“Keep your filthy twitching hands off my wedding stage!”

Armand sneered, his voice dripping with venomous arrogance. Tommy remained utterly silent, his mouth clamped shut, chin quivering. Tears welled in his wide, paralyzed eyes, tracing paths through the sudden crimson flush on his bruised cheek. Nathan, meanwhile, stood frozen for a beat, his jaw clenching rock-hard, his breath hitching in his chest, his eyes flaring with a volcanic fury barely contained.
