A Nightmare in the Ballroom

The scent of expensive lilies and champagne was instantly replaced by the metallic tang of blood. Diana, dressed in a stunning silver gown that was supposed to mark the happiest day of her life, fell to her knees on the pristine white runner. Her heart shattered as she pulled her eight-year-old daughter, Lucy, into her arms. Lucy was sobbing hysterically, a deep gash on her forehead dripping crimson onto the open pages of the gold-embossed wedding guest book.

"Mommy, it hurts," Lucy whimpered, clutching Diana’s silk dress. "I didn't do anything wrong."

Before Diana could even process the horror of her daughter's injury, a cold, mocking voice cut through the gasps of the gathered high-society guests. Standing just a few feet away was Lucas, the man Diana was supposed to marry in less than an hour. Clad in a sharp charcoal tuxedo, he stood beside his wealthy mother, Eleanor, his arms crossed and his face devoid of any warmth.

"That's what happens when you raise a thief," Lucas said coldly, looking down at the bleeding child with utter disgust.

The ballroom went dead silent. Diana looked from her crying daughter to the man she thought she loved. Eleanor chimed in, her voice dripping with venom. "We warned you, Lucas. You can't bring street trash into a family of our standing. She stole my diamond heirloom bracelet, and when she was caught, she threw a tantrum."

"I didn't take it, I promise!" Lucy sobbed, her tiny body shaking as blood smeared across her cheek. "I didn't!"

Diana’s maternal instinct flared into a blinding, dangerous protective rage. She wiped the blood from Lucy’s forehead, her eyes scanning the grand room. Then, she spotted it—a small, dark glass dome nestled in the ornate crown molding directly above the registry table. A slow, terrifying smile crept onto Diana's face as she glared up at her fiancé.

"You should have checked the CCTV..." Diana whispered, her voice carrying a deadly promise. She stood up slowly, her silver gown shimmering under the chandeliers, and locked eyes with the man who had just ruined their future. "...before you touched my daughter."

In an instant, Lucas’s smug, arrogant expression crumbled into sheer, paralyzing shock.
