Marcus looked down, his eyes narrowing as he prepared to kick the piece of trash aside. But the faded colors on the laminated card caught the dim light of the diner. He paused, his hand freezing over his radio. He knelt down, his heavy boots squeaking on the wet floor, and picked up the card. It was a worn, water-damaged photograph of a smiling firefighter in full gear, standing proudly in front of an engine.

Marcus’s breath hitched in his throat. He stared at the face in the photo, then looked up at the crying boy, searching the child's bright blue eyes and blonde hair. The resemblance was undeniable. The man in the photograph was David Vance, a heroic firefighter who had tragically lost his life three years ago—and the very man who had pulled Marcus out of a burning apartment building a decade prior, saving his life.

"Where did you get this?"

Marcus's voice was no longer booming; it was a hushed, trembling whisper. Leo wiped his nose with his sleeve, looking terrified. "That’s my dad," Leo whispered, looking down at his worn sneakers. "He... he died. My mom got really sick last month, and we lost our apartment. I was just trying to get her something to eat because she hasn't eaten in two days."
