Previously: When Elizabeth was cast aside by Thomas's powerful family, they thought she was gone forever. Years later, she walks into his wedding with the highest rank in the military.

The Price of Betrayal

Charles Vance tried to take the folder from Elizabeth’s hands, but the honor guard instantly stepped between them, their rifles held firmly.

"This is a frame-up! You're doing this out of spite because my son left you!"
Charles roared, his composure completely shattering. Elizabeth looked at him with pity.
"I did not spend fifteen years in the mud and on the sea for revenge, Charles. I did it for duty. The evidence was gathered by federal investigators, not me. I simply signed the arrest warrants."

With a wave of her hand, two federal agents in civilian suits entered the cathedral. They walked past the stunned guests straight to the altar. Thomas fell to his knees, his head in his hands as the reality of his choices crashed down upon him. He had traded love, honor, and Elizabeth for a wealth that was built on lies, and now he had lost both. The agents pulled Thomas and his father to their feet, placing them in handcuffs as the bride walked away, refusing to look back.

Elizabeth turned to the bride's family, who were major defense investors.

"Your family’s reputation is safe,"
she told them quietly.
"By halting this union, you have avoided being tied to their criminal enterprise. Consider it a clean slate."
The bride's father bowed his head in deep gratitude, realizing that Elizabeth’s dramatic arrival had saved them from absolute ruin.

Elizabeth turned on her heel and marched back down the aisle, her honor guard falling into step behind her. She had not returned to seek vengeance for the heartbroken girl she once was, but to deliver justice as the leader she had become. True rank is never inherited or bought; it is forged in the fire of integrity, leaving those who choose betrayal to drown in their own greed.
