Previously: A condescending doctor mocks a rural physician’s methods, only for her to save his dying son from a rare neurotoxin. The confrontation escalates, revealing a hidden connection and a shocking truth.

The fragile peace shattered with a sudden, violent gasp. Ten feet away, Julian, the governor's son, dressed in an ivory cashmere crewneck, suddenly clutched his throat. His fingertips turned a horrifying shade of cyanotic purple as his spine arched and he collapsed onto the polished floor. The sickening hollow thud echoed through the lounge, shattering a crystal tumbler into a spray of glittering shards. Dubois, his composure finally cracking, rushed forward in a flurry of flustered paralysis, his manicured hands fluttering uselessly as he avoided touching the convulsing boy.

“Cardiac arrest! Someone get a defibrillator, he’s dying!” Dubois stammered, panic lacing his voice.

But Lily was already in motion. With lightning precision, she dropped to her knees beside the convulsing teen, her fingers instantly palpating his neck. She peeled back Julian’s left eyelid, her calloused thumb revealing asymmetrical pinpoint pupils. A quick glance revealed a dendritic network of swollen, blackish-blue veins creeping up his jugular vein. The diagnosis was instantaneous, a lethal neurotoxin cascade unfolding before her eyes.

“Blue-ringed octopeptide neurotoxin from runway cargo crates—defibrillation will rupture his heart in twenty seconds!” Lily declared, her voice sharp and commanding.

Dubois gaped, sweat beading on his furrowed forehead, his jaw sagging in humiliated cognitive dissonance. He had been so quick to judge, so certain of his own superiority, and now his world was tilting on its axis. The rural physician he’d so readily dismissed held the key to his son’s survival, and the clock was ticking down to oblivion.
