He banished his wealthy mother after finding his sobbing partner forced to wash dishes
The Kitchen of Humiliation
The bass from the jazz band in the living room vibrated through the marble countertops of the upscale suburban home. To any outsider, the evening was a roaring success—a lavish celebration of Brandon's recent promotion, attended by the city's elite. But inside the bright, pristine kitchen, tucked away from the clinking champagne flutes, a completely different scene was unfolding.
Maya stood before a sink overflowing with dirty dishes, her hands trembling as she wiped away hot, cascading tears. At just twenty years old, she felt entirely out of place among Brandon's wealthy associates, but she had never expected to be treated like hired help. Her dark brown wavy hair clung to her damp face, and a plain white apron was tied tightly around her waist, contrasting sharply with the elegant dresses worn by the guests just a few feet away.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors swung open. Brandon stepped into the room, his sharp charcoal grey suit slightly disheveled from hosting. He had been looking for Maya for twenty minutes. When his eyes landed on her tear-stained face, his expression hardened with anger and confusion.
"What's going on here?" Brandon demanded, his voice slicing through the muffled party music.
Before Maya could speak, a shadow fell over the threshold. Victoria, Brandon’s fifty-two-year-old mother, glided into the kitchen. Dressed in a stunning, champagne-colored gown that practically screamed old money, she scoffed dismissively, waving a manicured hand in the air.
"Don't be so dramatic, Brandon," Victoria said smoothly. "She just wanted to feel useful. It's not like she fits in out there anyway."
Ignoring his mother, Brandon stepped closer to Maya. His heart broke at the sight of her trembling shoulders. Gently, his fingers reached for the knot of the white apron, untying it and letting it slip to the floor. He cupped her face, forcing her to look into his eyes.
"Look at me, Maya," Brandon pleaded softly. "Did you really want to wash dishes during my party?"
Maya looked up, her voice cracking as she sobbed. "No... she told me that my place was in the kitchen because I'm just the mother of your daughter, not your wife."
A suffocating silence fell over the kitchen. Brandon's eyes flashed with a dangerous, protective rage. He slowly turned, pointing a trembling finger toward the door, directly at his mother.
"My party is over," Brandon growled, his voice dangerously low. "Get out of my house. Now."
Without waiting for Victoria's response, he pulled Maya tightly into his arms, burying his face in her hair as she finally let go of her tears.
