He Came Home To A Loving Wife And Twin Babies, But A Sinister Secret Unfolded
The Return
The heavy oak door swung open, and Marcus stepped into the familiar, comforting embrace of his home. The scent of lemon polish and blooming jasmine, a fragrance he associated with peace and belonging, filled his senses. After weeks away on a demanding business trip, the sight of his suburban sanctuary was a balm to his weary soul. Through the open double glass doors, the meticulously kept garden glowed in the soft afternoon light, framed by elegant white stone pillars. Inside, a plush white rug lay sprawled across the polished wooden floor, dotted with vibrant green indoor plants in terracotta pots. A clean, white-painted fireplace stood as a silent sentinel against the pristine white wall panels. It was the picture of domestic bliss, exactly as he’d left it, and exactly as he’d dreamed of returning to.
He saw Sarah, his wife, her slim figure a graceful silhouette against the rug. She was lying down, her brown hair tied back neatly in a bun with a white scrunchie, her wedding ring glinting in the light. Our twin daughters, Lily and Daisy, were practically climbing over her, their tiny bodies a whirlwind of giggles and playful energy. Sarah’s face was alight with a smile as she gently nudged them back, her eyes sparkling with maternal love. Marcus felt a surge of overwhelming affection. This was his world, his perfect life. He clutched the vintage black suitcase in his hand, a symbol of his recent absence, ready to set it down and finally be present.

“The first thing I heard,” he mused internally, his heart swelling with contentment, “was Sarah’s sweet voice.”
“Oh, no. The little princesses have defeated me.”
He chuckled softly, a sound of pure joy. He started to walk further into the room, eager to join them, to scoop up his daughters and hold his wife. Lily, however, turned her head, her innocent gaze locking onto him. A tiny, delighted sound escaped her lips.
“Daddy.”
Marcus froze. The word, so familiar, so cherished, hung in the air. But then, Daisy, nestled in Sarah’s arms, stirred. Her little mouth opened, and a different sound, equally sweet but utterly perplexing, emerged.
“Mama.”
A cold dread, sharp and unexpected, pierced through Marcus’s euphoria. He looked from Daisy to Sarah, whose smile seemed to tighten infinitesimally. What had he just heard? And why did it feel so wrong?
