The wind howled like a banshee, a primal scream against the sturdy timbers of the old Kansas event barn. Outside, a Category 4 tornado tore through the landscape, but inside, the annual alumni reunion was in full swing. Or rather, it was trying to be. The ancient oak trusses groaned under the strain of the 100 mph gusts, rain sheeting against the rattling windows like a barrage of tiny stones. Swaying Edison chandeliers cast dramatic, dancing shadows across the polished concrete floor and weathered wood, illuminating a scene of forced festivity amidst the brewing storm. Gregory Thorne, a man who wore his arrogance like a bespoke suit, stood center-stage, a crystal tumbler of scotch in hand, surrounded by laughing, affluent classmates. His smirk was as sharp as his jawline, his pomade-slicked hair defying the chaos outside.

Then, a figure emerged from the tempest. Liam Vance, lean and stoic, his military posture unmistakable even in a drenched, utilitarian trench coat. He stepped from a battered yellow taxi into the gale, a faded scar stark against his cheekbone. Gregory’s head snapped around, his smirk widening into an abrasive sneer. He raised his glass, his voice carrying over the din. “Look what blew in from the gutter—did you have to empty your savings account just for taxi fare to our reunion, Liam?” Liam remained silent, his slate-blue eyes narrowing, water dripping from his chin like icy tears.

Gregory strode through the scattering crowd, the amusement of the alumni fueling his cruelty. He leaned into Liam’s face, jabbing a manicured finger towards Liam’s soaked lapel. “Ten years later and you’re still the pathetic charity case who doesn’t belong in the same room with real success!” Liam’s jaw clenched, his breath slow and controlled, a lethal stillness emanating from him as lightning momentarily bleached the color from his carved cheekbones.

Suddenly, the barn shuddered violently. Blinding tactical spotlights and strobing emergency lights sliced through the wooden walls. The deafening roar of sirens announced the arrival of three midnight-black Chevrolet Suburbans, skidding onto the gravel. Gregory’s eyes widened in confused alarm. “What the hell is going on—who authorized an armed convoy onto private property during a tornado?” Liam stood unyielding as the guests recoiled in panic and the barn doors were ripped open by the gale.

Six towering Secret Service agents, clad in matte-black body armor, breached the entrance, their movements precise and urgent. They formed an impenetrable perimeter around Liam. The lead agent halted, snapping a crisp salute. “Director Vance, Air Force One is grounded by the squall—Presidential Command bunker is secured for your nuclear briefing, Sir!” Gregory’s face drained to a ghost-pale white, his crystal tumbler slipping from numb fingers to shatter on the floorboards.

Liam calmly withdrew a gold presidential cryptographic keycard. He stepped directly into Gregory’s trembling personal space. “Enjoy your party, Gregory,” Liam’s voice was a razor-sharp whisper. “By midnight, my intelligence division audits all your defense contracts.” Gregory could only tremble, his breath hitching in pure dread as Liam turned and strode into the waiting presidential convoy.
