Previously: When Daniel walked into his kitchen, he expected a peaceful family dinner. Instead, he found his wife committing an unspeakable act of cruelty against his helpless, elderly mother.

The Unmasking of a Monster

Dorothy was sobbing hysterically, her fragile body shaking beneath her shawl. Daniel immediately knelt beside her, wrapping his arms around her frail frame. "I've got you, Mom. You're safe now. I'm so sorry," he whispered, his own eyes welling with tears. He wiped the food from her chin with his sleeve, his heart breaking at her vulnerability.

Across the room, Lauren rubbed her arm where Daniel had gripped her, her panic quickly morphing into defensive anger. She straightened her green dress and glared at him, trying to regain her composure.

"Daniel, you don't understand! You're overreacting!" she yelled, her voice dripping with false indignation. "She's doing this on purpose! She spits her food out, she lies, she's trying to ruin our marriage! I am exhausted from taking care of her while you're at work!"

Daniel stared at his wife, appalled by her lack of remorse. The woman standing before him was a stranger. "Overreacting?" he spat, his voice deadly quiet. "I saw you, Lauren. I saw the look on your face. You were hurting her. Get out of my house. Now."

Lauren scoffed, crossing her arms.

"This is my house too! You can't throw me out over a misunderstanding. Your mother is losing her mind, Daniel. Who are they going to believe? An old woman with dementia, or your devoted wife?"

At that moment, Dorothy reached out with a trembling hand and tapped Daniel’s arm. She couldn't speak clearly, but she pointed a shaking finger toward the pocket of her lavender shawl. Daniel frowned, reaching into the soft fabric. His fingers brushed against something hard and metallic.

He pulled out a small, sleek digital voice recorder. It was turned on, its tiny red light glowing silently. Dorothy had started keeping it on her, a habit from her days as a legal secretary, to help her remember things. But today, it had captured everything.
