Previously: When Eric confronted his brother-in-law, Officer Stevens, about a fatal hit-and-run cover-up, he found himself trapped in a corrupt police station. But Eric had one final card to play.

A Web of Deceit

Mark smirked, a chillingly confident expression crossing his face as he realized they were alone. With a swift, practiced motion, he shoved Eric against the wall, reaching into Eric’s pocket and snatching the silver flash drive. He held it up to the harsh fluorescent light, a low chuckle escaping his throat.

"You always were too smart for your own good, Eric," Mark whispered, his face inches from Eric's. "But you're incredibly naive. Did you really think you could just walk into my house and take me down?"

Eric gasped for air, his back pressed hard against the cold concrete. "That drive is just a copy, Mark. I already emailed the files to the Chief of Police and the state prosecutor. It's over. The truth is out."

Mark’s smile only grew wider, sending a shiver of pure terror down Eric's spine. He leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a theatrical whisper.

"The Chief? Chief Higgins is my godfather, you idiot," Mark sneered. "He's known about the accident since the night it happened. Who do you think helped me delete the local server backups and clear the scene? Any email you sent has already been wiped from the system. As for the state prosecutor, they don't look at unsolicited emails from 'grieving, unstable' family members."

Eric’s heart sank. The corruption went far deeper than he had ever imagined. The very people sworn to protect the town were working together to cover up his sister's death. Mark pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt, the metallic click sounding like a death knell in the quiet hallway.

"Now," Mark said, his voice dripping with malice, "you're going to be arrested for assaulting a police officer and obstructing justice. Let's see how long your story lasts when you're sitting in a holding cell."

As the cold steel clamped around Eric’s wrists, he realized he was completely trapped. He had underestimated the enemy, and now he was at their mercy.
