Her Brother's Name Was the Key to a Deeper Betrayal

The next morning, Maya woke to the sound of birds chirping outside her window. For a moment, everything felt normal—the sun streaming through the sheer curtains, the weight of Dominic's arm around her waist. Then the memory of last night crashed over her like a wave.

She slipped out of bed and padded to the nursery, where Daisy was still asleep, her curls spread across the pillow. Maya watched her daughter breathe, then walked to the study where Dominic was already on the phone.

"I don't care what it takes," he was saying. "Find Cedric Shaw and bring me everything you have on him."

He hung up and turned to Maya, his face drawn. "Our security team hacked into the hotel's system. Cedric has been working for someone else—a rival developer named Victor Hale."

Maya's blood ran cold. "Victor Hale? The one who tried to buy the Bellagio last year?"

Dominic nodded. "He's been trying to take over our properties for years. Cedric was his mole inside the hotel."

Maya sank into a chair, her hands trembling. "But what does that have to do with my brother?"

Dominic hesitated. "Your brother Marcus was seen meeting with Victor's lawyers three weeks ago. He's out of rehab, Maya. He's clean. But he's also been gambling again."

Maya's eyes widened. "Marcus wouldn't do anything to hurt us. He's my little brother. He made mistakes, but he's not... he's not a traitor."

"I'm not saying he is," Dominic said gently. "But Victor might be using him to get to you. That envelope in Cedric's pocket was probably a payoff for Marcus—or a threat."

Maya's mind raced. She hadn't seen Marcus in over a year, not since he'd checked into a facility in Arizona. Her mother had told her he was doing well, but she'd never visited. She'd been too busy with the pregnancy, too wrapped up in her own life.

"I need to see him," she said. "I need to find out what Victor wants."

Dominic shook his head. "It's too dangerous. If Victor knows you're onto him, he could escalate."

"I don't care," Maya said, her voice rising. "He's my brother. And if he's in trouble, I'm not going to abandon him."

Dominic studied her for a long moment, then sighed. "Fine. But I'm coming with you. And we're bringing security."

Two hours later, they were driving to a modest apartment complex on the edge of the city. Marcus lived in a small one-bedroom unit, the kind of place that smelled like stale coffee and regret. Maya's heart ached as she knocked on the door.

Marcus opened it, looking thinner than she remembered. His eyes were bloodshot, but they widened with surprise when he saw her.

"Maya?" he breathed. "What are you doing here?"

"I need to talk to you," she said. "About Victor Hale."

Marcus's face went pale. He glanced past her at Dominic, then stepped aside to let them in.

The apartment was bare, with only a mattress on the floor and a few dishes in the sink. Marcus rubbed his arms nervously, avoiding her gaze.

"I didn't want to involve you," he said. "But Victor came to me a month ago. He said if I didn't help him get information about your hotel, he'd send me back to prison."

Maya felt like she'd been punched. "Prison? Marcus, you were in rehab, not prison."

Marcus laughed bitterly. "That's what I told Victor. But he has photos of me from last year—the night I got arrested for drunk driving. He threatened to release them, make it look like I was dealing drugs."

Dominic stepped forward. "What did he ask you to do?"

Marcus looked at the floor. "He wanted me to get the deed to the Bellagio. He said if I could get it, he'd pay off all my debts and leave me alone."

Maya's heart pounded. "The deed is in my name. I'm the sole owner."

Marcus's head snapped up. "What?"

Dominic explained. "When we got married, I transferred ownership of the hotel to Maya. I wanted her to have something of her own, something no one could take from her."

Marcus stared at his sister, his eyes filling with tears. "I didn't know. Maya, I swear, I didn't know."

"I believe you," Maya said softly. "But we need to find out what Victor plans to do next. He might come after the deed directly."

As if on cue, Dominic's phone rang. He answered it, his expression growing darker with each word.

"What is it?" Maya asked when he hung up.

Dominic's voice was tight. "Our lawyers just received a court order. Victor is claiming that the deed transfer was fraudulent, that I forged your signature."

Maya felt the room spin. "That's insane. I signed it myself."

"He's also claiming that you're not the rightful owner," Dominic said. "He's petitioning the court to freeze the hotel's assets until a hearing."

Marcus stood up, his fists clenched. "This is my fault. I told Victor about the deed. I didn't know it was yours, but I told him it existed."

Maya grabbed his shoulders. "We'll fix this. Together."

But as she said it, she couldn't shake the feeling that they were already too late.

The Hearing Was a Trap, and They Walked Straight Into It

Three days later, Maya and Dominic stood in a packed courtroom, facing Victor Hale's team of high-priced lawyers. Victor himself sat in the front row, a smug smile plastered on his face.

"Your Honor," Victor's lawyer began, "we have evidence that Ms. Rossi's signature on the deed transfer was forged. We're requesting an immediate freeze on all assets, pending a full investigation."

Maya's lawyer, a sharp woman named Rachel, countered. "We have the original documents, along with video footage of Ms. Rossi signing them in our offices. The signature is authentic."

The judge, a stern woman with gray hair, studied the papers. "I'll need to see the video evidence. We'll reconvene in one hour."

As the courtroom emptied, Victor approached Maya, his voice dripping with false sympathy. "I'm sorry it has to come to this, Maya. But business is business."

Maya met his gaze. "You'll lose."

Victor leaned in closer. "Will I? You've been so busy playing waitress that you've forgotten who you're dealing with. This hotel will be mine."

Dominic stepped between them. "Back off, Victor."

Victor laughed. "Your husband is a good actor, Maya. But he can't protect you from the truth."

He walked away, leaving Maya with a sinking feeling in her stomach. She checked her phone and saw a text from Marcus: "I found something. Meet me at the old warehouse on 5th Street. Come alone."

Maya showed the text to Dominic. "He says he found something. I have to go."

"I'm not letting you go alone," Dominic said.

"If Victor sees you there, he'll know something's up," Maya argued. "Marcus is my brother. He won't hurt me."

Dominic's jaw tightened, but he nodded. "Fine. But I'm sending security to watch the perimeter."

Maya drove to the warehouse, her heart pounding. The building was abandoned, its windows boarded up. She pushed open the rusty door and stepped inside.

Marcus was waiting in the shadows, holding a folder. "I found these in Victor's office," he said, his voice shaking. "He's been laundering money through the hotel for years. He's been using Cedric to funnel it."

Maya took the folder, flipping through the pages. Bank statements, wire transfers, emails—all linking Victor to a massive money laundering operation.

"This is enough to destroy him," she breathed.

But before she could say more, the warehouse door slammed shut. The sound of locks clicking echoed in the darkness.

"Did you really think I'd let you take that?" Victor's voice came from the shadows. He stepped into the dim light, a gun in his hand.

Marcus pushed Maya behind him. "Run, Maya! Get the folder out!"

Victor raised the gun. "I don't think so."

Maya's heart raced as she clutched the folder to her chest. She had to get out. She had to protect her baby, her family, everything they'd built. But she also couldn't leave Marcus behind.

And then the warehouse doors burst open, and Dominic's security team flooded in.
