The autumn wind bit through the city streets, carrying a thick mist that clung to the towering buildings. Julian wrapped his tailored black coat tighter as he stepped out of his office. For the past three weeks, his routine had remained unchanged. Every evening, he bought an extra takeout box of warm food, searching for the same young woman.

Her name was Sarah. She was barely twenty, her auburn hair tucked into a stained grey hoodie, her face smudged with dirt. When Julian approached her on the dark sidewalk, he gently handed her the warm box.

"Thank you, sir," she whispered, her voice trembling in the cold.

Julian smiled warmly. "You're welcome, Sarah. Make sure you eat it while it's hot."

She nodded and hurried away. But as Julian watched her vanish into the shadows, a nagging suspicion troubled him. In all these weeks, he had never once seen her eat. "Why doesn't she ever eat?" he muttered.

Unable to shake the worry, Julian followed her down a narrow, shadowy back alley. Sarah slipped through a rusted door into a decaying tenement building. Julian crept up to the cracked window of the ground-floor room, his breath catching in his throat.

Inside, the room was freezing. Two young teenagers sat huddled under a thin blanket, and an elderly woman, Evelyn, lay shivering on a cot. Sarah immediately began transferring the food into small bowls, serving them first.

"Did you get food, Sarah?" one of her siblings asked eagerly.

"Yes," Sarah replied with a bright, forced smile. She handed the container to the elderly woman. "You eat, Mama. I already ate at school."

Outside, Julian pressed his hand against the cold brick wall, tears rolling down his cheeks. He knew she wasn't in school. Whispering to the darkness, he choked out, "That's a lie."
