He Followed the Homeless Girl Who Refused to Eat and Discovered a Heartbreaking Truth
Previously: Every night, Zoe accepted takeout from Lucas but never took a bite. When he finally followed her into the dark alleys, he discovered the heartbreaking truth she was hiding.
An Unexpected Encounter
Lucas stood in the dim hallway, his breath catching in his throat. He looked at the elderly woman in the rocking chair. Under the harsh light of a single hanging bulb, her pale, wrinkled face became clear. The realization hit Lucas like a physical blow. The trembling hands, the gentle eyes, the way she rocked back and forth—it was Alice. The very same Alice who had raised him, comforted him, and been more of a mother to him than his own wealthy, distant parents ever were.
Twenty years ago, Alice had been wrongfully accused of stealing a valuable family heirloom by Lucas's mother. She was fired instantly and cast out into the streets, humiliated and penniless. Lucas, then just a teenager, had been powerless to stop it. He had spent the last five years searching for her, desperately wanting to make things right, never imagining he would find her like this.
Unable to contain himself, Lucas knocked softly on the doorframe and stepped into the room. Zoe jumped up instantly, shielding her younger siblings behind her. Her eyes flared with fear and defiance.
"Who are you? What do you want?" Zoe demanded, her voice shaking. "We aren't doing anything wrong!"
"Zoe, please, don't be afraid," Lucas said, raising his hands in peace. He slowly turned his gaze to the rocking chair. "Alice... is that really you?"
The elderly woman squinted through the dim light, her frail shoulders tensing. As Lucas stepped closer, letting the light fall upon his face, Alice’s eyes widened in disbelief. A tear slipped down her weathered cheek.
"Lucas?" Alice whispered, her voice a fragile thread of memory. "My sweet boy... is it really you?"
Zoe looked back and forth between them, completely bewildered. "Mama, you know this man? He’s the one who has been giving us food on the corner."
Lucas fell to his knees beside Alice's chair, gently taking her cold, frail hands in his. "I've been looking for you for so long," he choked out, his voice thick with emotion.
