The Public Humiliation

The air in the spacious, sun-drenched kitchen was thick with an uncomfortable silence. Chloe stood near the marble island, her curly brown hair tied up in a loose bun, her striped t-shirt a sharp contrast to the cold atmosphere. Across from her stood Tyler, wearing a dark gray sweatshirt and an expression of smug superiority. Their friends, Sarah and Mark, sat awkwardly at the dining table, pretending to look at their phones but hanging onto every single breath.

Tyler reached into his pocket and extended a heavy, brown envelope toward Chloe. His voice was smooth, devoid of any warmth.

"Chloe, don't make this awkward,"
he said, his tone dripping with false sympathy. He wanted an audience. He wanted everyone to see him taking control, acting as if he were the benevolent one in their crumbling relationship.

Chloe didn't flinch. She stepped forward, her eyes locked onto his. Slowly, deliberately, she took the envelope from his hand. She didn't open it; she already knew what it represented. It was a formal notice to vacate. Tyler had been hinting for weeks that the apartment—which he claimed his family owned—was no longer a shared space. He wanted her out so he could bring his new "lifestyle" into the open.

Holding the envelope firmly against her chest, Chloe stared him down.

"Everything's clear through the end of the month,"
she said, her voice steady and defiant. She looked at Sarah and Mark, then back to Tyler, refusing to let a single tear fall.
"No one should stay where they're only tolerated."

Tyler’s smug demeanor faltered. He opened his mouth, a sudden flash of panic crossing his features.

"Wait..."
he muttered, but the word died in his throat as Chloe gave him a cold, knowing smile.
