A Secret in the Rain

The cold autumn rain beat mercilessly against the historic stone gate of the old homestead. Thomas stood there, his dark fleece jacket soaked through, his hands trembling as he held a heavy, coarse burlap sack. Before him stood his elderly mother, Evelyn. Her silver hair was damp, clinging to her lined face, her eyes filled with a mixture of confusion and deep-seated dread. She had known something was wrong for weeks, but Thomas had refused to speak. Now, under the gray, weeping sky, the truth was unraveling.

"Take the rice and go, mom,"

Thomas whispered, his voice cracking under the weight of an unspoken burden. Before she could question him, he thrust the heavy sack into her frail arms. He didn't wait for her reply. Turning on his heel, he walked away into the downpour, his silhouette fading into the mist. Evelyn was left standing alone, weeping silently as the sheer weight of the sack pulled at her weak posture. She dragged the heavy bundle inside, her heart hammering against her ribs.

In the dim, shadow-drenched dining room, Evelyn placed the sack onto the worn wooden table that had seen decades of family meals. With trembling fingers, she untied the rough twine. Peering inside, she gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. There was no rice. Instead, tightly bound stacks of hundred-dollar bills filled the space, resting atop a simple white envelope labeled simply: "Mom."

Outside, hidden in the shadows of the rain-slicked garden, Thomas stood beneath her window. He watched her through the glass, tears streaming down his face, mixing with the rain. Inside his mind, a sorrowful voice echoed:

"I'm sorry, mom. I couldn't say it in front of her."

Inside, Evelyn clutched the note to her chest, sobbing uncontrollably. The money was a fortune, but she knew it came with a terrible price.
