The Crystal Veranda Fell Silent as Damien's Voice Cut Through the Warm Evening

The Starlight Veranda of the Monaco Grand Hotel shimmered under a canopy of crystal drapes, the Mediterranean dusk painting the marble in hues of amber and rose. Silver coffee urns caught the glow of lantern light, and the air smelled of jasmine and expensive perfume. It was supposed to be a perfect evening—until Damien Locke decided otherwise.

Damien, the regional VP, had been nursing a scotch for an hour, his tie loosened, his eyes scanning the room like he owned it. He didn't notice Nora at first, not until she waddled past with a tray of chilled compote bowls, her eight-month bump brushing against the tablecloth. I saw the sneer curl on his lips before he even moved.

With a flick of his wrist, Damien sent the glass bowl crashing to the floor. Crimson berries splattered across the white marble, juice pooling like a wound. The sound echoed, and every head in the veranda turned. Nora froze, her hand flying to her belly.

“Clean this floor right now!” Damien barked, pointing a manicured finger at the mess. His voice was ice, slow and deliberate, designed to humiliate. He leaned in, close enough that I could see the veins in his neck. “You heard me. On your knees.”

Nora’s lower lip trembled. She was eight months pregnant, her body aching, her shift nearly over. She had spent hours on her feet, serving these entitled guests, and now this man wanted her to crawl. But she knew the rules: don't argue, don't cry, just do the job.

She started to bend, her hand bracing against the table for support. That's when Leo, my five-year-old, stepped out from behind her. He grabbed the hem of her apron, pulling her back with all the strength his tiny arms could muster. “Mommy has a baby inside!” he shouted, his voice cracking with fear.

Damien laughed, a cold, brittle sound. “Then she should be more careful,” he said, reaching out to shove Nora's shoulder. I saw the intent in his eyes—the desire to watch her fall. Nora cradled her belly, turning to shield it from his hand.

But his hand never touched her. Because I was there.

I caught his wrist mid-air, my grip like iron. Damien's eyes went wide as he looked up at me, suddenly aware that he wasn't the biggest predator in the room. “Step away from my wife,” I said, my voice low and even, the kind of calm that precedes a storm.

He recoiled, shock flickering across his face. For a moment, he seemed to shrink, his expensive suit suddenly looking like a costume. But then he straightened, trying to muster his authority. “Do you know who I am?” he sputtered.

I didn't answer. Instead, I nodded to the Chief Operating Officer, who stepped forward, bowing slightly. In his hands was a glowing platinum tablet, the screen lit with a portrait—Nora's face, her name in elegant gold letters: Lady Nora Laurent, Sole Owner.

“Meet Lady Nora, our owner,” the COO announced, his voice carrying across the now-silent veranda.

Damien's face drained of color, his jaw going slack. He looked from the tablet to Nora, back to the tablet, as if the world had suddenly shifted beneath his feet. “This… this can't be right,” he stammered.

But it was. I draped my jacket over Nora's shoulders, the bespoke fabric warm against her skin. I lifted Leo into my other arm, his little heart beating fast against my chest. Then I looked at Damien, and I smiled—a smile that didn't reach my eyes.

“Revoke their membership right now,” I said to security. Four guards stepped forward, surrounding Damien, who was still staring at the tablet. He opened his mouth to protest, but the words wouldn't come.

As they escorted him toward the exit, he twisted his neck to look back at me. And in that moment, something changed. His shock hardened into a knowing smirk. “You think you've won, Dominic?” he called out. “Check your wife's contracts. Check what she signed before you married her.”

My blood ran cold. Nora stiffened in my arms, her face turning pale. The guards shoved Damien through the doors, but his words hung in the air like poison. I looked down at Nora, at Leo, and I knew—this was far from over.
