Chloe did not hesitate. Forgetting her post-labor pain, she pushed open the heavy glass door and rushed into the hallway. The nurses hurried over, but Chloe bypassed them all, her eyes locked on her husband. George immediately tried to smooth his suit, his face morphing into a fake mask of concern as he reached out to comfort her.

"Chloe, darling, go back inside! This crazy homeless woman was trying to sneak into your room to steal from us. I was just protecting our baby,"

George stammered, his voice smooth but frantic. He reached down to grab the elderly woman’s arm to drag her away, but Chloe snapped. "Don't you dare touch her!" she screamed, kneeling down beside the weeping woman.

As Chloe helped the woman sit up, she brushed a stray lock of hair from the woman's face. The elderly woman looked up, her eyes watery and red. She reached out a trembling, wrinkled hand and gently touched Chloe’s cheek.

"My little Coco-bean..."

she whispered, her voice cracking.

"You have your mother's eyes. I just wanted to bring you some apples from the old orchard."

Chloe froze, her breath catching in her throat. "Coco-bean" was the private nickname only her biological mother had used—a mother George had told her had died in a tragic accident years ago. Chloe looked from the bruised elderly woman to her husband, whose face had gone completely pale. The truth began to dawn on her, cold and horrifying.
