The Dark Secrets of a Perfect Husband
Megan's heart pounded against her ribs as she struggled to open the heavy glass door of her private suite, her hands shaking so violently she could barely turn the latch. When she finally stumbled out into the corridor, holding her newborn baby tightly against her chest, she was greeted by the sight of Edward standing over the elderly woman, his voice a harsh, low whisper.
"Get up and get out of here before I have security throw you in jail!" Edward hissed, his face red with fury. "You have no right to be here!"
"Edward! What is wrong with you?" Megan cried out, tears streaming down her face as she looked at the bruised, elderly woman weeping on the floor. "You just kicked her! Why would you do something so monstrous?"
Edward quickly turned, his expression instantly shifting from malice to a desperate, manufactured concern. He tried to reach out to Megan, but she recoiled, stepping back toward her room.
"Megan, darling, please go back inside," Edward pleaded, his voice trembling. "You don't understand. This woman is a dangerous vagrant. She was loitering around the ward and trying to steal from the nurses. I was only trying to protect you and our baby. She's crazy."
But the elderly woman on the floor looked up, her tear-filled blue eyes locking onto Edward. She let out a ragged sob, clutching her bruised hip as she looked at him with a mixture of profound heartbreak and disappointment.
"Eddie... how could you say that?" Helen whispered, her voice cracking with pain. "I only wanted to see my granddaughter. I brought the apples from the orchard you loved as a boy. I didn't mean to embarrass you."
Megan's breath caught in her throat. The word "Eddie" echoed in her mind, sending a chill down her spine. She looked from the weeping woman on the floor to her husband, whose face had suddenly drained of all color.
