Previously: A corrupt hotel director humiliates a pregnant waitress in front of her five-year-old son. But when her billionaire father arrives, the tables turn in the most satisfying way possible.

The Past Comes Knocking

Maya sat in her father's private limousine, Leo asleep in her lap, the city lights of Geneva blurring past the tinted windows. The silence between her and Cesare was heavy, laden with seven years of estrangement and a lifetime of secrets.

"You disappeared," Cesare finally said, his voice rough. "No calls, no letters. I thought you were dead."

"I thought you wouldn't care," Maya replied quietly. "You never approved of Ethan. And when he died—"

"I didn't approve of him because he was a coward," Cesare cut in. "But you were my daughter. And this—" he gestured at Leo, "—this is my grandson. You should have come home."

Maya's eyes burned. "I was ashamed. I'd built a life away from your world, and I didn't want Leo to grow up in it."

"And yet," Cesare said, a grim smile crossing his face, "you've been living in my hotel for three years."

Maya jerked her head up. "What?"

"The Geneva Summit. I bought it the year you left. I put it in your name, hoping you'd eventually walk in and claim it. But you never even looked at the paperwork."

Maya felt the world tilt. "You've been— watching me?"

"Protecting you," Cesare corrected. "From afar. I knew about Alistair's cruelty, but I had to wait for the right moment to expose him. Tonight, he crossed the line."

She wanted to be angry, but the exhaustion was too deep. "What happens now?"

"Now, you take your place as owner," Cesare said. "And we deal with Alistair's threats."

Maya's blood ran cold. "What does he know?"

Cesare's jaw tightened. "He was the one who leaked the documents about my business dealings to the press five years ago. He's been blackmailing me ever since, threatening to expose things that could destroy the family name."

"What things?"

"Things I did to build the empire," Cesare admitted. "Things I'm not proud of. Alistair has proof of a deal I made with a rival syndicate— a deal that led to a man's death."

Maya's heart stopped. "You killed someone?"

"I didn't pull the trigger," Cesare said heavily. "But I gave the order. And Alistair recorded the conversation."

Leo stirred in her lap, mumbling in his sleep. Maya pressed her hand to her mouth, trying to process the horror of it all.

"You can't let him destroy us," she whispered. "Leo doesn't deserve that life."

"I know," Cesare said. "Which is why we're going to find the recording and burn it. Tonight."

The limousine pulled up to a nondescript warehouse on the outskirts of the city. Cesare's bodyguards fanned out, weapons concealed but ready. Maya hesitated at the door.

"Stay here," Cesare ordered. "This is my mess."

"No," Maya said, surprising herself. "If I'm the owner, then I'm responsible too. I'm coming."

Cesare studied her for a long moment, then nodded. "You have your mother's fire."

They entered the warehouse, the air cold and damp. At the far end, Alistair sat in a chair, his wrists bound, a smug grin on his face despite the guards surrounding him.

"Well, well," he drawled. "The prodigal daughter returns. Come to watch your old man grovel?"

"Where's the recording?" Cesare demanded.

Alistair laughed. "It's not here. It's with a lawyer, along with instructions to release it to every news outlet if anything happens to me. So you can't kill me, Rossi. You're stuck with me."

Maya stepped forward, her voice steady despite the fear. "What do you want?"

Alistair's eyes roamed over her. "I want the hotel. Sign it over to me, and I'll disappear. The recording goes to the grave."

"That's not going to happen," Maya said.

"Then your father goes to prison," Alistair said. "And your little boy grows up knowing his grandfather is a murderer."

Leo's voice echoed in Maya's mind. Mommy has a baby inside! She had to protect her children, but she couldn't let an innocent man's death go unpunished either.

"There's another way," she said slowly. "What if I can prove you were the one who leaked the documents?"

Alistair's smirk faltered. "You can't prove anything."

Maya pulled out her phone. "I've been recording this conversation," she said. "And I have the hotel's security footage of you tipping that tray tonight. Plus, I have a witness— the COO who saw you plant the documents in my father's office three years ago."

Alistair's face went pale. "You're bluffing."

"Am I?" Maya smiled, a cold, hard smile that mirrored her father's. "I've been underestimated my whole life, Alistair. But tonight, you made a mistake. You picked the wrong pregnant maid."

She hit send on her phone. "The footage is already with my lawyer. By morning, every news outlet in Geneva will know what you did."

Alistair lunged forward, but the guards held him back. "You'll regret this!"

"I doubt it," Cesare said, stepping in front of Maya. "Enjoy your time in prison."

As they walked out, Maya felt a strange sense of peace. She'd faced the monster and won. But she knew it wasn't over— Alistair had allies, and the recording was still out there.

"We need to find that lawyer," she said.

Cesare nodded. "I already have someone on it. But Maya—" he paused, "—I'm proud of you."

Maya's eyes filled with tears. For the first time in seven years, she felt like she had a family again.
