Previously: A smug cruise manager humiliates an elderly janitor. But when the janitor reveals a gold ring, the entire board bows. And the twist? The janitor is the founder.

The Boardroom of Secrets

They took us to a private elevator that I never knew existed, hidden behind a brass panel in the check-in desk. The doors slid shut, and Grandpa finally let out a breath.

“You did well, Noah,” he said, his voice soft. “But the hard part isn’t over.”

I clutched his hand. “What do you mean? You own the whole cruise line, right? You can just fire Damien and go home.”

He shook his head, and for the first time, I saw a flicker of fear in his eyes. “Damien is just a pawn. The real enemy is in the boardroom.”

The elevator opened onto a marble hallway lined with portraits of men in suits—my grandfather’s ancestors, I realized. He led me into a conference room where twelve people sat around a mahogany table. They all stood when he entered.

“Chairman Kensington,” a woman said, her voice tight. “We weren’t expecting you.”

Grandpa didn’t sit. He stood at the head of the table, still wearing his janitor’s apron, and placed the gold ring in the center. “I found a rat in my terminal. And I want to know who sent him.”

Richard Moretti stepped forward, his platinum tablet glowing. “Sir, the security footage is already parsed. Damien’s orders came from a shell account linked to the marketing director, Harold Vance.”

A man at the far end of the table turned pale. “That’s a lie.”

Grandpa’s eyes locked onto him. “Harold, you’ve been embezzling from the hospitality fund for three years. You thought I didn’t notice because I was just a janitor.”

Harold stood, his chair scraping the floor. “You’re insane. I’ve been running this company’s marketing for a decade.”

“And you’ve also been running a side business with our competitors,” Grandpa said. He pulled a folded paper from his coveralls and slid it across the table. “That’s your signature, isn’t it?”

Harold grabbed the paper, scanned it, and his face crumpled. “I… I can explain.”

But Grandpa wasn’t done. “You also convinced Damien to humiliate me on camera, thinking I’d retire quietly. But you forgot one thing.”

“What?” Harold whispered.

Grandpa smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “I gave you that job.”

My Mother’s Secret

The room fell silent. Harold sank into his chair, his hands trembling.

But then a new voice cut through the tension. “Dad, stop.”

I turned. My mother stood in the doorway, her eyes red, her hand gripping her purse like a lifeline. She was supposed to be in Florida.

Grandpa’s face softened. “Margaret.”

“I know why you’re doing this,” she said, stepping forward. “You’ve been waiting for years to expose them. But you can’t do it this way—not in front of Noah.”

I looked between them, confused. “What’s she talking about, Grandpa?”

My mother knelt beside me, taking my hands. “Noah, your grandfather isn’t just the founder of Sovereign. He’s also… your great-grandfather’s son from another marriage.”

I blinked. “I don’t understand.”

“You have a cousin,” she said, her voice breaking. “A cousin who was supposed to inherit everything. But he disappeared twenty years ago. Your grandfather has been looking for him ever since.”

Grandpa nodded slowly. “And I think I just found him.” He turned to Harold, who was now shaking so hard the table rattled. “Harold, you’re not just my marketing director. You’re my nephew.”

Harold’s jaw dropped. “That’s impossible.”

“Your mother’s name was Evelyn,” Grandpa said. “She ran away with a man named Carl Vance. You changed your name to hide from me. But your eyes—they’re her eyes.”

The room erupted in whispers. Harold looked like he might be sick.

And then the doors burst open, and Damien stumbled in, his badgeless lapel trembling. “I can prove Harold’s guilt!” he shouted. “I have the voice recordings!”
