Previously: Arthur Sterling, a billionaire, feigns blindness to expose his gold-digging fiancé's true nature. But when Brad attacks Chloe over a locket, Arthur's shocking reveal changes everything.

The Locket's Secret

Two hours later, the gallery was quiet again. The police had taken Brad to the station, and the velvet benches still bore the indent of his weight. Arthur had dismissed the staff, sending them home with stern instructions to speak of nothing.

Now he sat alone with Chloe in his study, the gold locket resting on the mahogany desk between them. The girl's eyes were red-rimmed but steady. She had her mother's courage, Arthur thought. That was a gift and a curse.

"Dad, why did Brad want the locket so badly?" Chloe asked, her small voice trembling.

Arthur sighed, running a hand through his silver hair. He had hoped to protect her from this truth a little longer. But secrets had a way of surfacing, especially when they were buried in gold.

He picked up the locket and pressed the hidden latch, a mechanism he had installed himself years ago. The back panel swung open, revealing a folded piece of paper, yellowed with age.

Chloe leaned in, her eyes widening. "What is that?"

Arthur unfolded it carefully. Inside was a deed, dated twenty years ago, transferring ownership of the Sterling Shipping Corporation to a trust—with a single beneficiary: Chloe Sterling, upon her eighteenth birthday.

"Your mother wanted you to have the company," Arthur explained, his voice thick. "She knew Brad was a vulture, even back then. She made me promise to keep this safe until you were old enough."

Chloe frowned. "But Brad didn't know about this. He just wanted the locket because it was shiny."

Arthur shook his head. "Brad was a pawn, sweetheart. Someone sent him to get that locket. Someone who knew exactly what it held."

The phone rang, sharp and sudden. Arthur picked it up, his face hardening as he listened. When he hung up, his eyes were narrow.

"They let Brad go," he said. "His lawyer showed up with a bail bond and a story about a misunderstanding."

Chloe's face fell. "He's free?"

"For now," Arthur said. "But that's not what worries me. The police found something in Brad's apartment—a burner phone with a single contact. One number. No name."

He turned the phone toward Chloe, showing her the screen. The number was familiar. It was his own personal line, the one he gave only to family.

Chloe gasped. "Dad, that's—"

"I know," Arthur said, the words cold as iron. "It's my brother's number. Richard."

The doorbell rang. Arthur stood, his jaw tight, and strode to the window. Outside, a black Mercedes idled in the driveway, and Richard Sterling—his younger brother, his business partner, his closest confidant—stepped out, a thin smile on his face.

"Arthur!" Richard called, his voice carrying through the glass. "I heard about the excitement. You must be exhausted."

Arthur turned to Chloe, his eyes burning. "Stay here. Lock the door. Do not open it for anyone."

He walked to the front door, his cane tapping against the floor—not out of blindness, but out of habit. He opened it and faced his brother.

Richard's smile widened. "Brother, we need to talk about that locket."

Arthur stepped aside, letting him in. The game was far from over.
