Previously: Victor pretended to be blind and deaf to expose the truth about his fiancée. But when Brad lunged for Chloe's locket, the real test began—and the wedding ended in handcuffs.

The Secret Hidden in the Locket

After the police took Brad away, Victor sank back into his wheelchair, suddenly looking every one of his sixty-eight years. Chloe climbed into his lap, and he held her close, but his mind was elsewhere.

"What did he mean, Grandpa?" Chloe asked, her small voice breaking the silence.

Victor didn't answer. He just stared at the locket in her hands, his expression dark. Finally, he spoke, his voice heavy with regret. "That locket contains something more precious than gold, my dear. It contains the only copy of my will—the one that leaves everything to you."

I stepped forward, my heart pounding. "But Brad just tried to steal it. Why would he risk that if he had another plan?"

Victor looked at me, and for the first time, I saw fear in his eyes. "Because he already has the will. He must have taken it weeks ago, when I was 'asleep.' What he was trying to do today was take the locket to destroy the evidence—the proof that he stole it."

I felt cold. "So the will is in his possession?"

"Not for long," Victor said, pulling out his phone. "I have my ways. But there's something else you need to know."

He hesitated, and Chloe looked up at him with those innocent eyes. "What is it, Grandpa?"

"Your mother," Victor said, his voice breaking. "She didn't die in a car accident. She was murdered."

The room seemed to spin. Chloe gasped, and I grabbed the edge of the table to steady myself.

"Murdered?" I repeated. "By who?"

Victor's eyes were hard. "By Brad. He wanted her out of the way so he could get to me. And I let him think his plan was working, because I needed proof."

I thought of Brad's cold smirk, his greedy eyes. It all made sense now. The accident, the sudden engagement, the way he had pushed to have Victor declared incompetent.

"But why?" Chloe whispered, tears streaming down her face. "Why would he do that?"

"Because your mother was the only one who knew the truth," Victor said. "She had found evidence that Brad was embezzling from the company. She was going to expose him."

He took the locket from Chloe's hands and opened it. Inside, instead of a photo, there was a tiny USB drive. "This is the evidence," he said. "Proof of every crime Brad ever committed."

I stared at the tiny piece of plastic. "So what do we do now?"

Victor's expression hardened. "We're going to the police. But we have to be careful. Brad has friends in high places, and he'll do anything to stop us."

Chloe clutched Victor's arm. "I'm scared, Grandpa."

"I know, sweetheart," he said, stroking her hair. "But we have to be brave. For your mother."

We left the mansion that night, driving through the storm in Victor's black sedan. The rain lashed against the windows, and I could see the tension in Victor's shoulders.

But as we turned onto the main road, headlights blazed behind us. A black SUV was following, staying close.

"He's found us," Victor said, his voice grim.

I looked in the rearview mirror and saw the SUV speeding up. "Hold on," I yelled, flooring the accelerator.

The chase had begun.
