A Waitress's Nightmare in the Halls of Justice

The county supreme courtroom was a cathedral of wood and marble, usually filled with the hushed rustle of legal documents and the low murmur of anxious spectators. Today, however, the tension was a palpable entity, thick enough to taste. Dust motes swirled in the amber light cast by grand brass chandeliers, illuminating the polished leather benches and the pristine Carrara marble defense table. Amidst this imposing scene stood Martha, a 38-year-old courthouse waitress. Her worn blue dress and stained apron spoke of long hours and little rest, her hazel eyes red-rimmed, betraying a weariness that went beyond physical fatigue. She was a fixture in these halls, largely unnoticed, until today.

Looming over her was Carter Ross, a mob lieutenant whose bespoke charcoal suit and slicked-back hair exuded a dangerous confidence. His upper lip curled into a perpetual sneer, a mark of his contempt for the world around him. Seated silently behind the defense table, a figure of granite stillness, was Don Nathan Shaw, 55. His tailored Italian wool suit and silver-threaded hair radiated an aura of lethal authority, his flint-grey eyes missing nothing. Martha found herself trapped beside the defense table, a spilled glass of water having dampened a stack of legal briefs. Carter Ross cornered her, his shadow falling over her like a shroud. "Spill water on my defense briefs again, trash," he hissed, his voice venomous, "and you'll lick it off the floor!" Martha stood frozen, her breath catching, tears welling, her jaw quivering with helpless humiliation. She remained silent, mouth shut tight, the humiliation a bitter pill.

Suddenly, Carter’s right arm whipped forward with savage speed. His heavy gold signet ring caught the chandelier's glare before it connected with Martha’s left cheekbone. The sickening, flesh-splitting crack echoed, a sound far too loud for the tense courtroom. The kinetic shock snapped her head sideways, sending fine crimson droplets arcing through the air as she stumbled back, catching herself on the jury railing. "Consider that your courtroom tip," Carter sneered, his apology laced with pure sadism. Martha clutched her rapidly swelling jaw, tears streaming down her pale cheeks, paralyzed by the sudden, brutal violence. She remained silent, her world reduced to the searing pain and shocked disbelief.
