Previously: When Mark saw his wife pouring milk over their sobbing daughters, he reacted with blind fury. But his heroic intervention turned out to be a devastating mistake.

A Fatal Misunderstanding

Clutching Lily and Emma tightly to his chest, Mark expected them to cling to him in relief. Instead, the girls shrieked louder, fighting against his grip. "No, Daddy, no! You hurt Mommy!" Lily wailed, her tiny hands clawing at his charcoal jacket. Emma, her eyes swollen red and streaming with tears, choked out, "She was saving us! It burned, Daddy! It burned so bad!"

Mark froze, his heart dropping into a cold abyss. "What?" he whispered, his gaze darting from his sobbing daughters to the unconscious form of his wife. Sarah lay perfectly still on the hardwood floor, a thin trickle of blood escaping her lip, surrounded by a pool of spilled milk and shattered glass.

It was then that Mark noticed the orange canister rolling slowly across the tiles. His breath hitched. It was his professional-grade bear deterrent sprayβ€”a highly concentrated capsaicin formula he kept locked in the garage. The girls must have found it while playing. The oil-based chemical was highly toxic, capable of causing temporary blindness and excruciating pain upon contact with skin and eyes.

"Oh God, what have I done?"

Mark realized the horrifying truth. Sarah, a former pediatric nurse, knew that flushing capsaicin with water would only spread the agonizing oils and intensify the burn. She had grabbed the milk because the dairy proteins were the only immediate way to bind and neutralize the burning chemical. She hadn't been torturing them; she had been performing emergency first aid. In his blind, hot-headed fury, Mark had brutally attacked the woman who was actively saving their daughters' eyesight. Trembling, he grabbed his phone with slick, milk-covered hands and dialed 911, tears finally spilling down his face as he knelt beside his unresponsive wife.
