He Saved His Baby Sister, Then His Stepmother Pointed at Him — Until the Nanny-Cam Played — Part 3

Previously: Liam dives to save his baby sister from a runaway carriage, but his stepmother blames him. Then his little sister reveals the nanny-cam footage that changes everything.

The guard who took that photo was Astrid's inside man

The next morning, I confronted my father with the photo. He studied it for a long time, his expression unreadable.

"That's Marcus," he said finally. "He's been with us for five years. He's the one who found the brake chain loose."

"He was there before I even dove," I said. "He had his phone out before the carriage even started moving. That's not a coincidence."

My father's eyes hardened. "Then we need to find out what he knows."

We called Marcus into the study. He was a tall, wiry man in his forties, with the kind of calm demeanor that came from years of military service. But when he saw the photo, his face went pale.

"I was just recording the morning light," he said. "For my photography hobby."

"You were recording me," I said. "Before the carriage even moved. Why?"

Marcus hesitated. Then he pulled out his phone and showed us a video he had taken—not of me, but of Astrid, standing on the terrace the night before, speaking with a man I didn't recognize.

"She paid me to keep an eye on you," he admitted. "She said you were planning to hurt Sophie. She told me to document everything you did."

"And you believed her?" my father asked, his voice dangerously low.

"I didn't know what to believe," Marcus said. "But after the carriage incident, I knew something was wrong. So I did my own digging."

He pulled up another file on his phone. "Astrid has a second phone. She's been using it to coordinate with someone outside the estate. I traced the number—it belongs to a private investigator named Daniel Reyes."

My father and I exchanged a look. "What does she want with a PI?" I asked.

"She wanted him to dig up dirt on you," Marcus said, looking at me. "Specifically, on your mother's death."

My blood ran cold. My mother had died in a boating accident two years ago. It was ruled an accident, but I always had my doubts. And now Astrid was digging into it.

"Why?" I whispered.

Marcus shook his head. "I don't know. But I found this." He handed me his phone, showing a text conversation between Astrid and the PI. The last message from Astrid read: "Find proof that Liam killed his mother. Then the estate is mine."

I felt the world tilt. My father grabbed my arm to steady me.

"She's trying to destroy our family," I said. "She's been planning this for months."

My father's face was like stone. "Then we're going to destroy her first."

We called the police with the evidence we had. The PI, Daniel Reyes, was arrested that afternoon, and he quickly turned on Astrid, revealing everything—including the fact that she had tampered with my mother's boat, causing the accident that killed her.

Astrid was arrested on charges of attempted murder, conspiracy, and murder. Her prenuptial agreement didn't save her from a criminal trial.

In the end, she was sentenced to 25 years to life.

As the gavel came down, I held Sophie in my arms, and Maya stood beside me, her hand in mine. My father put a hand on my shoulder, and for the first time in years, I felt the weight lift.

"We're finally free," Maya whispered.

I looked down at Sophie, who was babbling happily, unaware of the monster who had tried to destroy us. And I knew that no matter what, our family would always protect each other.

"Yeah," I said, my voice steady. "We are."

And as we walked out of the courthouse into the bright New England sunshine, I knew that my mother was watching over us, and that her justice had finally been served.
