The Night the Sky Fell

The Grand Majestic Hotel, once a beacon of opulence, was now a tomb fighting for its life. Outside, the midnight sky unleashed its fury. Winds, shrieking at 200mph, hammered the colossal structure. Lightning, a violent strobe of blue-white fire, fractured the darkness, illuminating the chaos within. Towering stained-glass windows, works of art in their own right, imploded, sending shards of colored glass raining down like deadly confetti. The grand marble lobby, usually immaculate, was now a swirling pool of floodwater, three inches deep, reflecting the agonizing dance of the Austrian crystal chandeliers above. These opulent fixtures, moments before symbols of luxury, now swayed precariously, their delicate crystals sparking like captured lightning. Set into the very heart of this disaster, a massive, double-leaf cast-iron hatch lay flush with the marble – a storm cellar, a sanctuary, or perhaps, a trap.

Clara, a man weathered by sun and hardship, his face a roadmap of a life lived outdoors, crouched low. His gray-streaked hair was plastered to his forehead by the deluge, his farmer’s canvas jacket heavy with mud and water. His hands, thick and calloused, were his anchor. He braced himself against the terrifying suction that threatened to rip the very hatch from its moorings. Facing him, from the relative safety of the concrete steps leading down into the earth, stood Julian. Young, impossibly rich, Julian’s aristocratic features were contorted in raw panic. His bespoke cashmere coat was soaked, his silk tie askew. He trembled, a stark contrast to the cowering, wealthy souls huddled in the subterranean shadows behind him. Clara’s voice, a guttural roar fighting the wind’s howl, cut through the din:

“Get everyone down to the bottom, the latch sheared off!”
His raw strength was evident as he strained against the vibrating iron handles, veins bulging, boots sliding on the wet marble. Julian, however, remained frozen, his breath hitched, his eyes wide with a terror that stole his voice.
