A Dawn Encounter on the Pier

The pre-dawn chill bit deep as Armand Dubois, a man whose face seemed etched by perpetual sneering, surveyed his grim task. The decaying wooden pier, slick with the night's rain and the relentless sea spray, groaned under the weight of the ocean swells. Tangled fishing nets, still damp and smelling of brine, clung to rusted iron rings. The air was thick with the eerie sound of distant foghorns and the creaking lament of salt-weathered pylons. A single, sodium-amber lantern cast long, distorted shadows, creating a chiaroscuro effect that heightened the sense of dread. Dubois, clad in a grime-stained parka and puncture-resistant gloves, held a stainless-steel euthanasia pole syringe, its needle glinting menacingly. His target: K-9 Jax, a battle-hardened German Shepherd whose nine years had clearly left their mark. Deep shrapnel scars marred his muzzle, and one ear bore the notch of a past fight. Jax shivered, not just from the cold, but from a deep, defensive exhaustion, huddled against damp wooden crates. A tattered Kevlar harness, crusted with saltwater, was pinned with a tarnished military valor citation. Dubois loomed over him, his thin lips curling into a sneer.

"Nobody claims a vicious stray, you die right here."

Jax remained utterly still, his mouth firmly closed, ears pressed flat against his skull. His amber eyes, usually alert and steady, now swam with a terrified defeat. His breath hitched in shallow, trembling bursts. Dubois stepped forward, the needle catching the dim light.

"Just another piece of pier trash nobody will miss."

As Dubois moved to jab, the camera focused sharply on the gleaming needle, then on the scarred brow of the dog and the scratched bronze citation on his harness. Jax's chin quivered, a silent agony contorting his features. A single, glistening tear welled along his scarred lower eyelid, a testament to his hopeless plight.

Suddenly, a deafening metallic clang shattered the tense silence. The ground seemed to vibrate as a sleek, carbon-fiber prosthetic heel slammed onto the wet timbers. Through the parting mist, the camera whipped up to reveal Sarah Vance, a decorated Delta Force veteran. Her jaw was chiseled, her glare combat-hardened, and her auburn hair was tied in a severe military knot. She wore an olive drab field coat adorned with silver combat assault badges over cargo trousers that exposed her advanced prosthetic leg. Her posture was rigid, her jaw muscles clenched in lethal fury.

"Take your filthy hands off that soldier before I snap your neck!"

Her voice, a guttural command, cut through the fog. Dubois froze, his smug grin evaporating instantly, his eyes widening in paralyzed shock. His breath hitched in his throat, the syringe slipping slightly in his trembling grasp.
