Previously: When Marcus tracked down Clara to a quiet rural town after seven long years, he expected answers about their past. Instead, he came face-to-face with a young boy who looked just like him.

The Truth Behind the Lie

Clara quickly ushered Toby back inside the house, her hands trembling as she closed the screen door behind him. She turned to face Marcus, the man she had loved and lost, the man whose memory she had tried so hard to bury. The neighbors watched from the fence line, their whispers growing louder, but Clara could only hear the pounding of her own heart.

β€œYou have no right to come here, Marcus,”
Clara said, her voice cracking with emotion. She crossed her arms, trying to shield herself from the intensity of his gaze.

Marcus took another step forward, his expensive leather shoes sinking slightly into the soft soil of her yard.

β€œNo right? Clara, you disappeared without a single word! I spent seven years searching for you, thinking I did something wrong, thinking you didn't love me. And now I find you here, with a boy who looks exactly like I did at his age. You owed me the truth!”

The pain in his voice was raw, and it cut Clara deeper than any blade. She let out a bitter, tearful laugh. β€œI owed you? Your mother threatened to ruin my life, Marcus! She told me that if I didn't leave, she would use your family's fortune to declare me unfit and take my baby away forever. I was just a working-class girl to them. I had to protect my son!”

Marcus stopped dead in his tracks, his face turning pale. The anger in his eyes vanished, replaced by utter shock and horror.

β€œMy mother... did what?”
he whispered, the realization of his family's betrayal finally sinking in. He had spent years believing Clara had simply abandoned him, never knowing that his own flesh and blood had been driven away by the very people he trusted.
