The Triton's Revenge

The air in the old dockside tavern hung heavy, a potent cocktail of brine, stale beer, and the metallic tang of impending doom. Outside, the Atlantic raged, its fury mirrored by the torrential downpour hammering against the grimy industrial skylight overhead. Rusted chains, relics of forgotten voyages, dangled like spectral nooses from the water-stained timber beams. Warm, amber light from vintage Edison bulbs fought a losing battle against the encroaching gloom, casting long, dancing shadows across the wet, worn floorboards.

Gregory Thorne, a man sculpted by arrogance and tailored in the finest navy Italian cashmere, lounged against the bar. A diamond signet ring flashed on his hand as he swirled a heavy crystal tumbler of amber scotch. His gaze, sharp and predatory, was fixed on Samuel Vance. Samuel, a rugged salvage diver, stood dripping, his black neoprene wetsuit peeled down to the waist, revealing a damp thermal undershirt. Salt-crusted stubble clung to his jaw, and his matted hair clung to his forehead, testament to his recent, grueling dive.

With a wet, heavy thud, Samuel dropped a waterlogged, barnacle-encrusted canvas sack onto the plank floor. It was a stark contrast to the immaculate surroundings Thorne favored. Thorne let out a low, mocking chuckle. "Still dredging gutters in that floating rustbucket, Samuel?" he drawled, his voice laced with condescension. "Sign over your drydock before you drown in debt." Samuel remained silent, his breath coming in ragged bursts, steam curling from his nostrils in the cool, damp air. His jaw clenched, a silent promise of defiance.
